I were christian when i watched Matrix I, has no other knowledge of other religions or spiritual concepts.
To me, and other christians, Matrix I was a visual representation of Jesus and bible concepts.

Just before deconversion read up pn Matrix I and Wachowski brothers main concepts was from book, Simulacra and Simulation , which is in movie.
Neo hides all his pirated programs in it when the guy knocks on his apartment and says, "you're my personal savior man".

Deconversion and then I read they infused concepts from all over the place, religion, philosophy, etc.

Perhaps the mish mash of too many concepts.
The lone hero worked well for the first movie, the first to really set himself free, as an example for others.

But the next two he seemed so far away from everyone, especially if compared against all the ravers in Zion.
Well he became more distant from 2 to 3.

Matrix 2 was hard for me because i knew nothing of these other concepts and they just wouldn't shut up, there was a lot of dialogue of complex concepts.
Hah! Oh for the good old days of christianity where i didn't have to think much to understand the bible concepts.

It was reported that the Wachowski brothers said Matrix was alway a trilogy.
I dunno, i think the next two were after thoughts.

Neo fighting the chinese dude in sunnies in M2, the oracles bodyguard, what was the point of that other than a lame fighting scene.
The albino dreadlocked twins, who were invincible...for about 5 minutes, what was the point of those two, apart from another fighting scene that did nothing for the plot.

Although, pondering the mishmash of numerous concepts.
This no doubt annoyed me because i didn't know anything about them, so calling it a mishmash is a biased opinion based on ignorance.
I watched 1hr doco on the philosophy of The Matrix.
One scene stands out to show the Wachowski brothers thought long and hard about things.

The scene with Neo and the Architect and the wall of monitor screens.
Each image of Neo is doing different things, but they all do the same thing when Neo decides to save Trinity.
I suspect there will be tons of these concept ques all throughout the last 2 installments.
Soo, Matrix 1 was simple, 2 and 3 were more complex for me.
Perhaps at that time, it was i who was afraid to go down the rabbit hole.

Perhaps, now with a few years under my belt of not having a bible mindset, of reading and exploring many other concepts, I will have a different experience with Matrix 2 and 3.
Just gotta ignore the pointless time filler stuff.
Or, just read the books that inspired them.

Before AC kindly created this thread I had never even heard of the film 'Powder' but have since managed to get hold of the DVD.

Really looking forward to watching it if the consensus here is anything to go by

Somewhere in Time

I would add to the list "Somewhere in Time", the romantic sci-fi movie with Christopher Reeve and Jane Seymour. It was about time travel.

I have not seen this movie though I know of it. I saw a snippet of it a long time ago.
The scene where he's been in the past, settling into his new life, then finds something in his pocket.
It's his watch and....well no spoiler, but you know what happens next.

Inevitably designer people WILL happen. Having begun deciphering the genetic code, the steps to do so are just an engineering problem, but the possible implications of this are staggeringly sobering, for individuals and the future of the entire Human race.

Yes, Moon was a great movie, a relative unknown, but it was really tastefully done i thought.

Blade Runner of course, and since i am a massive PKD fan, i will suggest both 'A Scanner Darkly' & 'Minority Report' which were good. And there is another movie i own that is based on a PKD story that is sort of low budget, but pretty good all the same i thought anyways; which is called 'Impostor'. Or 'Waking Life' though it is pretty dialogue heavy. 'Titan AE.'
'Lost In Space'.

Lot of good ones mentioned already. How about 'Legend'? That was a good classic fantasy type of movie. Best bad guy in any movie. Tim Roth as the devil.

I haven't read through the whole thread, apologies if some have been mentioned already.

'City of Ember' was pretty good relatively new one too. I'll probably think of more.

Ah-ha so I missed Dark City and Gattica...so glad all were mentioned - was surprised to see Somewhere in Time -
my first copied movie from HBO - when VHS tapes were $17!!! Maybe '81 or '82!
Back in the day.

I have not seen anyone mention The Fountain, yet.
Was surprised so many had seen Enemy Mine!

Star Trek - The Motion Picture - with V-ger
City of Angels with N. Cage...
The Philidelphia Experiment - very old.
Men Who Stare at Goats - a stretch, but a comedy about the paranormal, a hoot.
They Live
The Final Countdown
Time after Time - Mary Steenburgen
Stargate
Ladyhawke Michelle Phif
Altered States W. Hurt
Dreamscape - oldie
Road Warrior

Has anyone mentioned Solaris (either version)

As tenderly moving as "Spotless Mind" but even deeper, more profound, and thoroughly thoroughly heart wrenching.

I loved Soderbergs version , but Tarkovsky made it poetic, a visual meditation.
