belief or practices...

i know this may be completely off most topics being discussed, but does every religion or belief need to have to be so involved in practices? what happens if you have the belief in something but you dont know how or have the means to do the practices? is belief in something not enough?

Athear, I know many wiccans/pagans, especially solitaries, who just have the belief system without any need to practice. I am also sure that there many who hold to the principles of Christ without being christian.
I suppose this is a valid life-style. Conversely, I think practice without the belief seems sterile somehow.

Hello

I personally am still very undecided about my "true" path! I know im Pagan, but when someone asks what "kind" of pagan i am, i have no idea! I love Wicca, i love traditional Craft, i just love Paganism.

Because of this i do not practice anything. I think that if i do it will go horribly wrong and i want to know as much as i can before i start practicing. However, if you have the bleiefs and you a living the religion with practising magicks for instance, then you are still practising in a sense.

Does that make any sense?!

norseman i can agree with you and yes it would seem sterile, but what if you know no one that can help you learn or understand them... most things in a book as well could be well... just published for the sake of being published... how would one new to something get a hold of the practices? if they cant, does that mean they cannot follow a path and call themselves what they are? as well as then if one is able to understand and learn these practices, are they ok by yourself or are others needed etc... i know i might sound very confuzzled here and being honest i am lol...

i know 1 or 2 people here who i don't very well get along with who claim to be wiccan etc but iv never seen them go according to any beliefs, do no practices, it more feels like they state they are just cause it sounds cool and seem to use that as an excuse to have polygamous relationships and be bi-sexual. And no I'm not saying anything is wrong with it as i believe its personal preference but if people are what they say they are only for that and are the only one around me to "help me" i'm not sure if that's the best place to go lol...

and lost girl, i feel just as lost as your name states lol... i also don't know what my true path is. I'm very interested in paganism and wicca and such but i don't know what i would say i am... i love mother earth and i love the moon and the stars and feel such a drawing to nature. when i was younger i could just feel it on the wind when there would be a storm coming. i personally (even if this makes me sound terrible) have so much more respect for nature and animals than i do for humans... i feel like i have a purpose in life for something and i have no clue how to connect with it... like something feels empty inside and i don't know what will fill it...

Hi Antear

You have to have a hunger within your belly Athear .

A man that has his belly full from eating 3 courses of food will not have any satisfaction for eating anything else thereafter.

If an Individual Is quietly drawn to the arts for example they maybe content with just viewing galleries .

An artist that has the desire and passion to draw will do so with his last breath and will find materials somehow In order to fulfill such a thirst .

How hungry or thirsty are you ?

Athear, this is something I posted a while back. Might be useful to you

SO YOU FEEL DRAWN TO WICCA ?
Something inside you is telling you that you want to explore wicca.. You immediately want to do something about it but don’t know what.
Now I should explain that I began in wicca before reverting to an older, more primitive form [ picture Norse slouching along in the hedgerows with straw and twigs in his beard ! ] and I am still a Moderator in a Wiccan Forum.

So, here is Grandad Norsey’s guide to starting out in wicca.

It's a fair generalisation that all pagan paths are “green” and accented to the Earth. Tree Huggers all ! If you are not drawn to Nature, you might want to think about that.

Ok, lets make the assumption that you are one of Nature’s Children and you have a place in nature that uplifts you. Doesn’t have to be somewhere grand and glorious, just somewhere special to you.
You should now start to learn all about your place – the flora and fauna, the weather patterns, the geology, the rivers and streams, the wheel of the seasons, the people who went before [ I’ve been doing that for over 35 years and still only scratched the surface but then I am a fanatic ! ]. What you are aiming for is a sense of belonging, a sense that you are part of it, a sense that your place has imprinted on you, a sense that this is your Land !

Next step. Declare yourself in your Land. Make a promise to protect it. You can make this as simple as you like or you could make a simple altar [ flat piece of rock ] and dedicate to Mother Earth. Start making a record of your experiences and what you have learned – your BOS.

And there you are, Wicca 101. More ? Wicca 102 ?
This requires a certain level of practice in meditation – lets assume you have this.
Now start regular meditations in your place. Stick with it, it may take some time, but eventually you will start to notice things you missed before. Not suggesting that you do this but I did overnight vigils in my place which is a small offshoot of one of the Yorkshire Dales. One of the things you might see is the nocturnal life of the place. If you do this often enough, you will be accepted as a part of the place by these nocturnal visitors. If this happens, then you have really cracked it.

103 ?
It would be a very rare place indeed that has not been home to mankind before. In your meditations, start to focus on the people who went before you. Try to get a sense of them – who were they ? what did they do ? Depending on your sensitivity, you may also get a sense of the Nature Spirits in your place. You may sense energies around you.

I think that is enough to give you a sense that wicca is for you or not, as the case might be. No “spells”, no rituals, no rede. Just you firmly established as part of the Land. Where you take this is now up to you. Good Luck on your journey !

IMHO,
Belief is in the head. Practice is for the ego: If you really believe from your head to your toes, then it is so! If you want to touch the "physical with the mental then practice ( ritual) comes into play.

Hi Foodmuse .

Within the process of self enquiry and the practice of such likes as meditation the Individual can eventually transcend the ego mind .

Does the ego mind therefore wish the Individual to do such a practice?

Maybe Foodmuse is meaning the ******* rituals and titles used in some quarters. Too much show and not enough substance.
