Thanks to Miss Hepburn and the references to the "unstruck strings" of Kabir.

Guru Nanak also wrote on this, or the Name of God as Lumpino says:

“The Lord placed the soul in the body’s cave,
And the breath held the Music of Life.
He made each body with nine gates,
With the Tenth Gate remaining well hid.
And the Tenth Door was opened to him
Who truly loved the Guru’s wisdom.
And there lives the Lord in His myriad forms,
as well as the nine treasures of the Name.
His limit cannot be found.

“Says Nanak, the Lord placed the soul in the
body’s cave and the breath held the Music of Life.

“Listen to this Song of Bliss, you blessed ones,
And all your heart’s longings shall be fulfilled.
You will reach the Transcendent Lord, and
your sorrows will depart.
All afflictions and sorrows are destroyed
at the Sound of the True Word,
And my friends, the saints were in ecstasy when
the perfect Guru revealed it.
Those who speak and those who listen are pure,
And they see the All-pervading Lord everywhere.
Nanak prays: Attaching to the feet of the Guru,
The mind is filled with the divine Music of the Spheres.”

Peace

That is so beautiful!

When one is meditating, they seek to transcend the mind and thoughts of the mundane through various methods just to 'stop thinking' as it were.

One way to 'stop thinking' is by feeling or, as my guru once said; "to drop the mind into the heart".

This helps if you have strong feelings towards a Divine Being to begin with and so it becomes much easier.

As I was reading this thread, I had the feeling that my heart was being 'stabbed' and tears started welling up, but I had to put all that aside just to type this, so I didn't go into spontaneous meditation on the spot.

If one has that bhakti...those feelings of love, then indulging in these emotions cause them to intensify, which causes even further indulgence, which causes further intensification and on..and on this will go, until the heart and mind just explodes with bliss and one becomes lost...totally...lost. This is the aim and goal of meditation.

There's a million ways to meditate. You can do it while driving while working while cooking while having intercourse. the possibilities are endless. Try as many ways as you can till you find your way.

I love your post Badcopyinc! Especially the bit in bold (and also how everything is a form of meditation - including intercourse ).

Your wonderful words really do inspire me where I believe to meditate on God is to meditate on yourself - to be in touch with reality :)

Good question. It depends who's saying to meditate on God. It it can be a wide range of reasons from modern spiritual teachings that meditate on your Infinite aspect, the God within if you will, to the other end of the spectrum it could be religious people who might feel uncomfortable with meditation by itself so they need to bring something in from their religion such as God. And all the countless possibilities in-between. Pick whatever reason you wish, whatever resonates with you at this moment in your life. :)

Without a Guru, that may teach you exactly how to focus the Mind on
that which is Infinite and Eternal, yet, is within you...and accessible...
by yourself, I could tell you where to start !

You don't know me, so why listen to anything I have to say, tho...
...so listen to your intuition and follow what rings true for you.

There are many techniques that help calm the Mind...which is necessary.
Anything that calms or slows down thoughts is great...so I am not knocking them.
But, I would suggest a more direct route.

First, whenever you sit...your intention set is so very important.
In your heart, set the clear, sincere intention to connect with 'God'...
whatever idea you have of 'the All That Is'.
Anything else...drop it...example: to relieve stress, find an answer to a problem, find some peace...
Nope, your focus is on God Himself (Who has no gender), the Divine, the Godhead, the Creator,
Father, Higher Self, the One Consciousness that creates Universes and lies within all that exists, That Which
always was and will ever be...am I right?

So, Practice the Presence.

Sit in stillness and silence...open your mind, expand your awareness to the subtle...this is a place (the Secret Place of Psalm 91)
to not be aware of the body, thoughts or the world...
Tho, you may start becoming aware of sounds in the world not heard before, sensations not felt before...this is why it is called 'Practice'.
(Even baseball players warm up their muscles to prepare themselves.)

I would suggest later, big time, to place comfy, good earplugs in.
There will be a world of endless of sounds within, called Divine music, Music of the Spheres, Celestial Harmonies...Kabir writes about the
'unstruck strings'....you will find that within...once the thoughts are stilled...and your focus is within.

I could go on and on....but, this is a good start.
Be filled with wonder and expectation...know that this God... this profound experience
of this Spiritual Being can be experienced within beyond the mind and senses...we as humans were built for this intimacy with our Creator.

This is my experience of 44 years of deep meditation of hours and hours
and hours and hours and hours and hours of sitting in one session.

This is not a 10 minutes a day 'thing'...and during the day...keep the mind
and thoughts pure and kind.
As Paul said in Col 3:2....'..focus on the things above and not the things on the earth.'

Another way this was put to me that I really liked was to turn and look towards the light in the darkness. The light to me is found in a still mind. The darkness is also found in the mind but it is a restless one. That restless mind thinks or is is just lazy, that it can find this outside itself but eventually realizes that can only be temporary.
Great post!
