I also have regrets about things I did as a child. Sometimes it haunts me but then I tell myself at least I have grown beyond those things, and that is something to be proud of. We can't change the past, but we can control how we learn from the past and move forward.

What you did back then could have been a result of what you were enduring at the time. Until I found solace in my religion, I had profound regrets from having mistreated an animal as a child. I understand that I was actually mimicking what others were doing to me, taking it out on a creature that was powerless, just as I was powerless before my aggressors.

When something bad happens to me I try to accept it as a punishment for anything wrong I might have done in the past, so that my guilt is diminished and I can find forgiveness for myself.

We are forced to live with the memories, but once we get better as a person and accept that we weren't in the right state of mind when the incident happened, we no longer have to carry the burden of the blame.
