I guess it may be idolatry if his idea was you needed to sit or lay at the foot of the cross to feel God's glory. You can feel God's glory anywhere as God is within us always. Nothing external is needed.

God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth.

No, I don't think so. There are idols, and there are symbols. The cross is a symbol, there to help you to remember a sacrifice made to help others. To help inspire you to acts of your own and give you courage when facing your own trials of life (bearing your own cross). I suppose if you were to start worshiping the cross itself, it would be idolatry, but I am sure that is not the point. I expect that if one were to sit at the base of such a large cross and imagine Jesus hanging from it, voluntarily suffering to help others understand, then one might feel all sorts of things, glory among the rest.

Jonah 2:8..."Those who cling to worthless idols forfeit the grace that could be theirs". Re-examine what is defined as 'idols'. Is one an egotist.....concerned only with self? Is one focused on material things rather than spiritual things? These and so many other things are 'idols' not just golden calves. It is all about getting one's priorities straight....."Seek ye first the kingdom of God...."
