The metaphoric essence of our Paintbox Workshops:

Our workshops are inspired by all forms of Native spirituality, but especially Ojibway spirituality. Why the Ojibway? The Ojibway were - and still are - a very colourful people. Legends, stories, humor, crafts and artwork paints an enlightened existence in daily life inspired by an intimate relationship with the Creator or Great Spirit. Colours are considered medicine as much as they are paint. As much as colour is important in the creation of crafts and artwork, the symbolic essence of colour plays an important role in one's well being, spirit, and inner harmony with the Creator or Great Spirit.

It is possible the name "Ojibway" may well be rooted in the ancient word "ojibiwa" which means "to mark or write upon something with paint (colour) or salve (medicine)." Metaphorically if paint is colour, and colour is medicine, then paint is medicine too because it holds the same essence. The Ojibway, traditionally, can therefore be seen as "those who paint pictures with medicine." In this light, the Ojibway were, and still are in many instances, the makers of medicine pictures.

Some ancient Ojibway pictures, such as rock paintings known as pictographs, are truly "medicine pictures". They hold great symbolic meaning and wisdom and reflect a very sophisticated spiritualty. Traditional Native and Ojibway artwork, such as legend paintings, are inspired by traditional teachings; legends about manitous and stories that inspire everyday life. The use of specific colours symbolizes and reflects the wholeness of their sacred beliefs, tied to a never-ending connection with the Creator or Great Spirit.

From ancient red-ochre pictographs painted on rock cliffs to the symbols and pictures recorded on birch bark scrolls by The Midewiwin (The Good Medicine Society), Ojibway spirituality, symbols, and metaphors illustrate a deep philosophical understanding of both Nature and Humankind and their vital interconnectedness driven by an even deeper, more powerful, sense of spirituality - a spirituality that recognizes we are of ONE spirit and therefore inherently connected to ALL that is - WE ARE ALL RELATED.

Honouring Anishinabe (The Original People) vision and wisdom by using colour metaphorically as the essence of "good medicine", we too can be inspired to create our own medicine signs, pictures and totems and use them in our own lives to motiviate and encourage us; to enlighten our own spirits; and to connect us with all spirits everywhere and especiallly to the Great Spirit that resides in the centre of all of us within our heart.

Similarly then, if colour is medicine, colour is paint, and paint is medicine, a "paintbox" can be seen as not only a container to hold paint but also as a place to hold medicine. For the purposes of Paintbox Workshops (and Journeys), the essence of the word PAINTBOX is that it is simply a place that holds and shares the good medicine of colour - all colours, for all people.

The good medicine of the sacred colours and all you will come to learn they represent, are the true intentions of our workshops: Yellow represents East, Red is South, Black is West and White is North. Four colours representing the sacred four directions. But this is just on the surface. There is much more to it below the surface. The metaphoric teachings of the sacred colours and directions, that we call the "painted arrows" go on and on from there to create an entire circle of wholeness, an understanding of everything and that everything is connected. EVERYTHING.

In your Paintbox workshop, you will truly learn to see with new eyes. With the aid of the Painted Arrows - The Sacred Colours - we travel to the sacred directions, learn to think in abstract terms, and discover the essence of metaphors that will show you ALL things are related and connected to everything else - including you.

If you have questions or would like to register for a Paintbox Workshop (or journey, or just a visit)
