Hi Treacle,
If you're looking to get started with tarot I highly recommend the book Tarot 101 by Kim Huggens, it's a self paced tarot course in its own right, for beginners and more experienced readers. I love the way she writes and she shows you how to use your intuition when reading.
Another good book is 21 Ways to read a tarot card by Mary K Greer.
Both authors are highly respected in their field.
I'm another advocate of a Daily Draw. Sometimes, when first starting with tarot its easier to draw the card in the evening and then you can assess where the message of the card was applicable to your day. Once you start getting an understanding of the cards you can do your draw in the morning instead (
thats how I did it and it really helped) and sometimes its fascinating to get someone elses take on a card. It gives you one of those, 'well I never thought about it like that' moments
As Gilded Tarot closely follows the RWS tradition, this
http://www.learntarot.com/ is an amazing free resource to get you going regarding card meanings, but ultimately its down to what the card image says to you, each card speaks many things to many people.
Just relax with the cards, don't look too hard for meanings when you pull a card, usually the first thought that pops in to your mind is the meaning you are meant to have, and it will change every time you draw the card so it is in context with your question.
That is my 2 pennys worth.
Oh and have fun. Try some practice readings on here, (nobody bites) as we're all more than happy to help.
Love and light.
