Excellent to bring up that it was before mind.

Also, before pens and lips - thus is unspeakable in the human language.

Yes, it can't be conveyed. But it can be witnessed.

I recommend reading Zhuangzi instead of Laozi to get a better idea what Dao is.

No one can tell you what the Tao is because no one knows what it is. Some good teachers can give you clues. They think they know what it is. It is for you to decide what it isn't.

I know absolutely nothing about it, at all.

And that is enough.

The tao that can be described
is not the eternal Tao.
The name that can be spoken
is not the eternal Name.

The nameless is the boundary of Heaven and Earth.
The named is the mother of creation.

Freed from desire, you can see the hidden mystery.
By having desire, you can only see what is visibly real.

Yet mystery and reality
emerge from the same source.
This source is called darkness.

Darkness born from darkness.
The beginning of all understanding.

The Dao is for practical reasons, the "name" we give the eternal process of the universe. If I told you a deer was the Dao, it wouldn't be. The deer is a part of the Dao, but it is not the Dao. The Dao is no one thing or anything at all and since it is not, it is all things. If it is everything, then no longer can it be distinguished by any singular aspect of its universal totality that is infinite.

"The way that can be spoken of is not the abiding way." To put the Dao into words (apart from "the Dao" itself-simply as a way to acknowledge the infinite process that is actually the Dao) is to limit its infinite totality. It is being (such as buildings, objects, and material things) and positive non-being (such as empty space, potential, and utility from capacity) interacting divinely with one another outside the realms of time. If I had a room and filled it with boxes until I couldn't even walk into the doorway, would this room be useful to me? Of course not. Its potential as a room is derived solely from its "non-beingness" and empty space that makes it a "room". Here positive non-being is essential. If I gave you a blank page that was supposed to be a resume, would that be useful? Obviously, the answer is no. Here, being is necessary, or having the page full to the brim with information, contacts, and work history for an employer...

The Dao is a line too fine to trace and yet it paints the entire universe with what it already is. Hope I helped.

Mike
