Is it possibly a type of tremens? I am thinking that particularly with meditation, Your body thinks it ought to be doing something.. So there you are in stillness..and you get an itch or that tickle in the back of your throat, It's as though your body conspires against you and says "You will not relax".

Any how down and down you go , deeper and deeper. and your nerves get to thinking..So the itch isn't working, we'll try to do something else to prove conclusively that you actually belong in this body right now.

The other thing , mentioned above, the involuntary jolt when you drop off to sleep . might be a similar thing.

I am just wondering whether the body has mechanisms to stop you doing stuff that seems not right to it.

Yep that is very common that as soon as you start entering Trance state you get a itch on your face or somewhere like something is conspiring against you so you will not make it into trance state, it becomes a battle of the wills. It's actually called cobwebs and is very very common, it happens to me too.

That "itch phenomenon" happened to me yesterday morning when I lay down to get out of body. I just worked through it by not letting it bother me. An itch came, I scratched it, started again -no feeling of frustration.....and thought "If I lie here scratching itches for an hour, so be it. And if it doesn't stop, then I'll just get up and have toast and my favourite coffee instead."
Anyway, eventually, because I drifted away from any sense of being bothered by it, the itches gave up, and I went out of body OK.

Yup if you just ignore it eventually you will lose all body awareness and itches will be no issue. It's just getting to that point which is the tough part especially when you start getting all itchy. I have seriously thought that sometimes there is an entity causing me to itch because it's weird it's like the itches will always be in the weirdest places, places when awake I never itch in. I don't know what the actual cause of it really is but Robert Bruce called it cobwebs for some reason and said it's really common.
