Odyssey and Archetype

Swimming up from underneath
Searching for the source of peace

Dragonfly sat on the water
Resting on the hands of daughters

••

I've used a life of walking to teach me how to run
I've closed my eyes nine tenths of the way and stared straight at the sun
I've balanced on my hands while keeping both feet on the ground
I've sat long in the silence but had never heard a sound

Now I've skipped a beat and smelled the scent of blooming flowers
And laid out in their field and lost all earthly sense of hours
In the spring I buried me beneath the budding meadow
And four of five familiarised myself with red and yellow
I set my heart before me for what wait there in the evening
And without eyes could recognise but four around me breathing
Who walk upon their daughters from the border of the thicket
The serpent and the tabby cat, the dragonfly, the cricket

•••

Drums like thunder
Breath exciting
Fallen under
Felt the lightning
Heard his feet
By moon was laying
Words repeating
Rhythm swaying

Dimmed the light and saw the shifting
Totem pole and camphor lifting
Dragonfly sat on the cedar
Couldn't hear your music either

••••

Now Take a step
All that is left
Tumbled down the meadow cleft
In the canyon
Climbed the banyan
Hand is reaching for companion
On the tree branch tightly grip
Tumble words between my lips
Falling forward
Out of order
Hilltop toward
Take a step

Handed me the water bottles
Sitting on the Quetzalcoatl
Saw the birth
And tasted earth
Sleeping on the endless cobble
On the roadside where it set
Of the body I forget
Of the daughter
In the water
Stood he taller
Take a step

Taste I still the heaven ginger
Knowing nowhere south I linger
Time escaping
River gaping
Pointing down the mountain, finger
On the falling water sipped
Waxing where the dew had kept
Ever longer
With grandfather
Stood he taller
Take a step

Stood he taller on my head
Changing hands the loaf of bread
Indra wept
I took a step
Dragon flying where he lead

Lotus lying on the crest
Cardamom was all that's left
In his net
I took a step
On the jewel chose to rest

On her feet was never falling
Walking on the canvas calling

Waiting for me in the winter
Taste I still the heaven ginger

•••••

Somewhere on the ocean
A wave rises for one moment
Its sister water
Its brother water
Leaping up to imitate
For miles goes their lineage
At times unseeable and passing
At times colossal and crashing
That original wave sits in my mind
Buried deep under the surface of the water
Mingling, unknowable, amongst the billion
From its sister
From its brother
Lying down to imitate

At times his sons and daughters return
Even crashing on the surface
But deep below where they play
Remembering their great grand wave
Ocean sits in perfect peace
Under water
Only breathe

••••••

Rising from the source of peace
Searching for what lies beneath

Dragonfly sat on the water
Resting on the hands of daughters
