Saw it today. About 7/10.
A New Hope still the crowning achievement of the Star Wars universe.

I just saw the new "Star Wars" movie today, I just got back from the theater. It is nothing like the original. It is a dark and brooding movie, more like the last 3 releases of Star Wars, rather than the 1st three back in the late 70s.
The movie is saturated with more gory heavy violence than the 1st movie, and totally lacks the feel good nature of the 1st movie. It is very much a modern dark, gun happy movie.
It follows the format of the original 1st movie of the 70s, death star on steroids, and all. Many battle chase scenes. Better special effects. See it in 3D for the best experience. But it is not put together as well as in the 1st movie, and lacks serious charactor development. The battle scenes have have excellent special effects but lack any serious development in the suspense department. No real climax to them. They almost seem random in nature.
The movie ends with a 30 second scene of a Hermit Luke Skywalker. He is under a heavy dark robe, and he has dark brooding angry face, under a scuzzy beard, and he does not speak a single line. I promise you, you will not walk away from this movie feeling good, as one did in the original "Star Wars" movie. I give this movie a C+ rating.

My son and I are going early next week, for our Mother-Son 'date', haha. We're going out to eat afterwards and talk about it, LOL! I can't wait. :)
Whoever goes in the meantime, please don't share too many spoilers!!

Sister Moon, you remind me so much of my relationship with my boys.
My son and I have been watching the original movies this past week, leading up to the new film which hasn't come to theaters here yet... I think it'll premiere in a few days time... just hope my son won't be disappointed, he's been anticipating this film for so long...

I so agree with you!! To me the first 3 Star War movies were the best and still are the best. Nothing can compare to the original movies and the original actors. The actors in the other Start Wars movie are not good actors and they are just missing something. This new Star Wars movie looks the same, actors are not strong enough characters. I don't even waste my time watching it cause I know it just won't be as good.

......Not only that this latest move is quite depressing. Stay with the originals if you like that original Star Wars feeling.

Yeah, that does sound a lot like us, lol. It's great mother-son fun. Here's to us having a great time with our boys!
It seems like it's quite a transitional movie, into the Star Wars expansion. I'm sure it will be different.

I was looking forward to this because the trailers give it that 'classic trilogy feel' but the criticisms of it seem to be steering me away. Some of the reviews on IMDB point to it being like the Star Trek films by the same director, or that like the prequels it's made for the benefit of the toy franchise, which I can believe. Having read this thread I'm even more convinced that I should give it a miss.
