Post 18 Shakti Peethas, Asta Dasa Shakti Peetha temples dedicated to Goddess Shakti

Asta Dasa Shakti Peethas are the 18 Shaktipeeth temples or prominent & most auspicious temples dedicated to Goddess Shakti. It is believed that these temples are most ancient in Hinduism and considered as the heavenly abodes of the Goddess.

actually there are 51 such temples and there is a story behind these. when sati immolated herself at her father (daksha's sacrifice where shiva was insulted), shiva was consumed with rage and he started performing the tandava (dance of cosmic destruction) with sati's body in his hands. to prevent the annihilation of the world, vishnu intervened by cutting sati's body into 51 pieces with his discus (sudarshan). each place where different parts of sati's body fell became a shakti peeth. for instance, the heart fell at ambaji in gujarat, her yoni (female generative organ) fell at kamakhya (in assam). it is said that the kamakhya temple is closed during a certain period when a red fluid emerges from the temple (much like menstruation)
