Using the quote tags
Hello SF staff,
When making a post the forum software allows us to wrap quote tags around any part of our post that we see fit. If quoting someone else this would be appropriate - however this seems to conflict with the copy and paste rules of the forum.
Are we allowed to quote others on this forum if we place quote tags on the text; or only if it is a very short quote. In summary I am confused about the copy and paste rule in conjunction with deliberately quoting someone else.
Thankyou,
Jan.

Hi Honza,
Your fine to quote people on the forum, if it's done to be constructive and helpful.
The general rule is: if it is published, it is copyright protected. Therefore, we generally allow a few lines from any published content outside the forum
Every now and than we do get complaints from outside sources who do not like their material copied on here and have asked for it to be removed. So we keep that in consideration.
I hope that answers your question

People often quote when replying, and they bold parts of the quote they want to highlight (and discuss). However, as the author of a post, I do not want anyone to bold my text without the quoter writing "bold added by me" below the quote area. Bold changes the meaning of the text, and that was not my intention when writing the text (or I would have written in bold myself). The same goes with color etc.
Yes, it can be implied by the context that the bold is made by the quoter, but I do not like it and it is lazy. (but yes, I know some are unaware and with good intention).
But I do not expect others to do it, just that it would be nice.
