Every non-vegetarian becoming a vegetarian is itself a step forward in battling global warming, as the meat industry is considered to be one of the biggest contributors to global warming.

The Guardian has given a report stating the above.

With global warming reaching irreversible levels, anyone abstaining from non-vegetarian food, even temporarily would be doing a great benefit to the planet and for the future generations.

It is an austerity each one of us must go through, imho, till the planet's climate is stabilised, or at least to mitigate the damage or consequences as much as possible.

Also abstaining from non-vegetarian food also have health benefits in lesser incidence of heart diseases and cancer.

One day soon eating meat will be looked back on in the same way we currently view smokers and people who wear fur coats. I probably shouldn't say that, still it's true and that's the way it will be eventually. And hey, I'm not laughing at people, I'm laughing with them... it's just the future versions of them I'm laughing with. My own timeline:

~15 years ago - quit eating meat because touching it to cook it - let alone the thought of putting it in my mouth afterwards - disgusted me.
~12 years ago - quit dairy and breads when I grokked that pizza was making me sick every time I ate it.
~8 years ago - removed all processed foods from my diet. I was vegan at that point although I never called myself that because I don't like labels.
~5 years ago - switched to a fruit and vegetable only diet. That is my current diet. I am back to my highschool weight. And all my digestion problems have disappeared.

So nice to see your compassionate timeline Baillie. We all come to it on our own schedule don't we and no one ever knows who's words might be the trigger that sets us off in a new direction. I'll bet my daughter who was 'hating' an animal rights group had no idea at the time, that she would be instrumental in changing my heart and my lifestyle.

And while I know you don't like the 'vegan' label, I personally am happy to wear it because it identifies that it is my lifestyle which means it isn't just diet but it actually references my respect for the rights of animals to live in the same way I do (as much as is possible in this volatile world) in safety and without fear. I also love it when someone calls me a bleeding heart because it tells me that they recognize that I care about the animals. I consider them Badges of Honour.

That's some low percentages and I'm afraid that in a few years time they haven't really gone up much. Indians as a whole are likely to eat more meat because ''development'' gets associated with ''meat eating'' just like wine is.

I meet a lot of vegetarians but then I am active in environmental organisations. I live in the Netherlands but the majority of society doesn't think much of eating meat. Vegetarian diets should be mainstream. Yesterday the newspaper mentioned veg diets should be more mainstream.
