Can one make their own dream catcher and have it work as it's supposed to?

You can make your own. I am Ojibwe 1/4 blood. The story from my ancestors is this.
A dream catcher was hung over the cradle of a baby to keep out nightmares. How it works is this. Bad dreams get caught in the sinew (deer tendon strings) and get stuck (this is sticky), the good dreams know the way to the hole in the center - the stone there is usually hematite which also filters negativity. The good dream slides down the feathers in the middle and into the mind of the sleeping baby.
It can be used on adults and is usually hung at the headboard in a window.
Hope that helps.
Baamaapii (Ojibwe for see you again)

Originally they were made for new babies to keep bad dreams from them. The feathers hanging down are for the good dreams to follow down while all the webbing catches the bad dreams, much as a spider web catches the morning dew in the connections of the web. It was given to Native Americans by Grand Mother Spider. Native Americans make traditional dream catchers out of small branches, sometimes wrapped in animal hide. The webbing is made with sinew. To have 32 loops around the framing one must have permission from a medicine man. Loops are to be done in sacred numbers; 4,7,9,12,16,21. More than that has to okay-ed by a medicine man. That is what I was taught when instructed how to make them.

So to have an effective dream catcher I need to learn the rituals and beliefs of the Native American People? How do I go about that?

I want a dream catcher :)
And yes I love native americans and their beliefs, even when I was living in South Africa I was fascinated by native americans and always wanted to meet someone who is native american. The first time was in my first year of living in america at school, a native american came and spoke about his heritage etc, I ran after him after class and just asked a whole bunch of questions and he was nice enough to answer me.

PS I also see a native american spirit outside my house now and then.....

I have one next to my bed, but why do people hang them on their car rear view mirror? Are they sleeping while they're driving? lol
