Jesus / Buddha
Hi Spaceman you've sure asked a lot of interesting questions at the start of this one... we almost touched on the one regarding Jesus & Buddha already the other day so thought I'd say a few things.
Jesus was teaching what I would refer to in Sanskrit as 'bhakti'. That is 'Love of God'. He also taught that we should show love for God's children aswell, and be kind and merciful to other living beings, and to have good behaviour etc... but primarily what he asked for was for people to develop their Love of God.
Now for love to exist there must be two things - the lover and the beloved. It is a PERSONAL, reciprocal relationship between ourselves and the Supreme Father - God, which involves a great deal of surrender on our part. It is not simply a sentimental thing, but something which requires a great deal of internal sacrifice, as any loving relationship does.
Compare this to Bhagavad-Gita 11.55 where Krishna (God) gives the instruction:
"My dear Arjuna, he who engages in My pure devotional service, free from the contaminations of fruitive activities and mental speculation, he who works for Me, who makes Me the supreme goal of his life, and who is friendly to every living being - he certainly comes to Me."
Lord Buddha, on the other hand taught that there is no eternal saviour. No God. No Personal relationship with an eternal saviour. He did however teach much about all the other things which Jesus also taught - be kind and merciful to others, have good behaviour and so forth.
From what has survived of the teachings at least it also appears that Buddha had a much more philosophical approach, detailing the cause of suffering, and the cycle of re-birth etc... He paints a very comprehensive picture of existence but then at the final point, instead of 'Love of God' (Bhakti) we have 'nirvana', which I believe compares to 'Moksha' as is described in the Vedic literatures. That is 'liberation from material existence'.
Two very different goals, and two very different paths (internally), although both sharing certain forms of behaviour (externally), such as compassion and tolerance etc...

This is such an interesting thread to read. Thanks for the link about INRI, Poppies. I don't have much to contribute, but I just want to say how fascinating that piece of artwork is. What is the source, Spacey?

My fist impression is of a glass prison. One like our own personal one's. We can break/ step out of them any time, with knowledge and practice.
Another thing, J was rejected by all, so the world arround him may have become a prison of sorts. His frustration here shows that.
Being rejected by all, while knowing that he could enlighten them, as HE had become. If I can do it, so can you, kind of thing. It took abuse and violence if the accounts are true, before he was accepted proper.
Buddha was not so clear and strong about the supreme being as J , so there is a difference here. It is not so black and white at the same time. God either has personality, or not.
I am curious about J the singer. Anyone know more about this.
One more thing, there was apparently a character in those times and place who kept records of events, and there is no mention of the Jesus thing at all. If J's message was an appocalyptic one, his story would fit better into these times, alas, this second comming, is it the first and only?
Love and harmony to all Al.
