Don't recall who directed it, but yeah a very daring theme-character. IMO.
SciFi , but ALL about heart-love..... and an outsider few moviegoers can truly identify with or truly understand.
I suppose Starman was similar, but I'd consider that far more mainstream than Powder.

Victor Salva directed Powder. SciFi? Just felt paranormal/psychically gifted to me....

Outa curiosity.. Roger Ebert gave Powder 2 * and Starman 3*
He felt Powder fell short of it's potential (as a story) and while I might agree, I still feel it's emotional power was more than adequate to move an audience.
The plot with the deputy was enough to justify the film. IMO
And that was the principle goal... to have people feel.
Starman was far more complex, yet a similar character, though one who triumphed ....... The fact that Powder chose to leave as he did, however was perhaps even more moving. And unique.

I thought the most powerfully compassionate scene in Powder was when the sheriff shot the deer and Powder, overcome, held his hand over the shot, dying deer and placed his other hand on the sheriff's chest - in order to transfer the pain. Thought provoking (for those that needed to have a wake up call). Is that what you were referring to with the plot? I predicted the ending - good nonetheless.
Haven't seen Starman.
