There is another (less popular) explanation--if this person has been involved w/ drugs and alcohol--he might have formed an attachment.
It is better to face something like that fearlessly and combat it by beginning to improve ones lifestyle. Remember...fear feeds these beings--so panic can make it worse.

Any chance that you would be able to post the photo? There are apps for the iPhone that let you put scary ghosts in photos. I've seen these tricks taken way too far.
