I agree what the other said.. you are the intruder to the home and someone who is there for a few months while owner is away. Whatever is there may get on quite peacefully with the current owner.
I'm glad things are working out for you now but sometimes it's a good idea to not think we have more rights to be somewhere than something else has. You could of just asked if you could politely share the space while you were staying there "forgive me for the intrusion" instead of having the attitude "you must go, I want you to leave, this place is mine" esp when it's a temporary situation. That could turn a situation of curiosity and unease into a hostile situation. It doesn't surprise me that you found it acted up when you were not friendly due to fears.
