Just my views.
I think they're a swindle. How can someone meditate if they're being told what to think the whole time? If there's this voice droning on in the background?
They're possibly useful for a first time...being prompted on how to relax and stuff. But no way can someone still their mind with this voice going on telling them how to do it...particularly without the capacity to know the person trying to meditate. We all need different times for this.
If anything, study a few texts on what you're supposed to do to still your mind, find a way that works for you, then go into meditation.
Guided meditation seems like an easy answer but it's a bit like a crutch. It won't help people stand on their own feet unaided. Dealing with distractions creeping in isn't going to be helped by the guide BEING the distraction.

It depends on what it is, what you are looking for and what you hope to get out of it.
I prefer some self-hypnosis videos for those times my mind is just a tad too distracted to meditate.
