I sort of get what you mean. But when you're asleep you're not feeling anything so...

Have you heard of prana? It's breath energy in yoga.

I'm not what anyone could call an empath, but if I may suggest something, having a well developed chakra system prevents feeling overwhelmed by all this stuff you feel and also prevents the physical and mental ills. Many empaths are stuck in their sacral chakra. The heart chakra and crown chakra needs to be worked on especially for the ability to allow everything to just pass without it affecting you.

True, emotional responses naturally affect the rate and depth of breathing, but the breath does what it has to do in those instances.

Control is something that relates to the ability to retain a reasonably solid balance of the mind. A stable balance helps to be in control of the mind as opposed you becoming overwhelmed.

In shallow sleep we think, in shallow sleep I have little awareness. Not enough to control my breath.
