Food for thought: Mental/Physcal Health vs Spiritual Health

Hello there,

Was discussing this topic with a few people, and saw some interesting views from different areas and sides. Until it came to my mind to make a thread on this to hear your views.

The question is:

How important is mental and physical health for a good spiritual health? and vice versa.

And why?

Please do input whatever you got in mind, even if it does not answers this question but speaks on this topic.

You are a soul.
In this lifetime you are aware of your physical body and your mental capabilities. Why do we have these features?
Each body and mind have different talents that they bring to enhance the soul's existence/health/growth. Without these enhancements, how do you think life would go/be?
Can a mentally or physically ill patient experience a state of spiritual health? What defines spiritual health? How can being become ill?

I think poor mental or physical health can cause a breakdown in the ego, so can be a gateway to spirituality Can also go the other way though. To cause someone to identify so much with the illness that it blocks it.

Very interesting topic. In my situation, my awakening to spirituality began due to undiagnosed mysterious physical symptoms and being sensitive to energy. I turned to exploring my spiritual side because of this and have been for four years. It took me on quite a wild ride, but I still didn't have any major breakthroughs in improving my physical health despite my efforts at self healing and working out emotional issues. In fact, my physical health got worse, which in turn made my mental state worse (depression from never feeling physically well). I was insistent that there must be something on the spiritual level that I haven't yet uncovered, or a deep emotional block that had yet to surface, and so I continued to explore possible spiritual causes and different energy healing methods, desperate for answers. I was hitting brick walls wherever I turned and became so frustrated.

It wasn't until this past week that I visited a chiropractor (who is also a functional medicine Doctor) and after analyzing my structure and blood work he wondered how I was walking around this way for so long! My vestibular system and adrenal function were shot and had been overlooked by every doctor and specialist I had been to over the past 15 years. After the doctor adjusted me I felt instant relief and better than I have since I can't even remember when.

I was so relieved to have finally gotten some answers as to my physical health, but then it made me question a lot of things reflecting back on the spiritual journey I'd been on the past four years.

Before I continue to ramble on about myself, I will say I believe physical, mental, and emotional health does affect spiritual health as well as the other way around. I believe the path to find balance in all of the above levels looks different for everyone, meaning there's no one way to approach over all healing.

So if people have different capabilities, then are we suggesting that the spiritual growth of each person happens in a different way?

So we are suggesting that ego is interlinked towards spirituality, the lesser the ego we have the more likely we will be prone to spiritual exposures or realms?

I am very sorry to hear your side of the story, I really do hope you make a complete recovery from this.

So if mental/physical health can affect the spiritual health, and vice versa - is it important to have a good mental/physical health for a good spiritual health and vice versa?

A healthy body means spiritual practices are easier to perform. Hard to do yoga if I had a broken leg, hard to meditate if my back would be in pain. Mental health creates rest. So yes, I believe it’s important. We got a body, that isn’t a coincidence, it must be treated well.. :) It's about the process of developing energies to their fullest extent, and the body is a tool for that, and if the body's issues get in the way it means we lose energy and focus..

I’m not going to debate about it, only sharing my view based on practices..

Interesting thought, no intention for debate here. The reason why I put forward questions is to trigger further information out of the person lol - no personal intentions.

They are important, and things that go hand in hand, it's like being synchronized if you fall out of synch, what will happen?

One will start to fall and the other's will follow.

Sorry for late reply, just noticed.

It helps I think.

I have that trouble of back pain when meditating, especially after a hard day at work (I am physically active in my job). If my back hurts in the slightest, I just lie down and it is usually just fine.

I start to wonder if one's mind is running around loose and uncontrollable, then is it a mental disturbance that keeps one from spiritual health? In this case, if meditation is a spiritual devotion.
