[quote]Well I'm from the Netherlands, they usually call it liquor here as well.[quote]

:-D Now it all comes clear as to why you were speaking Dutch with Take a Break. I shouldn't have presumed you were from the US. Although you and Take a Break have the ocean in between :-). I've been to Amsterdam. I liked it! Only there for a one day though.

Sure, I admit that Amsterdam looks great on the outside. But for me, that's about it. I'd never want to go back there again.

Oh right, not good hey? We only had a walk around in the day time and visted the Anne Frank house.

Linen53. I priced your Tito's vodka up in the supermarket here today. 70cl down from £27 to £20. So about $34 down to $25. How does that compare to yours?

Can't figure out the conversions. We measure in ml. I'll let you figure out the conversions, lol.

Here where I live we get the 1.75 ml bottles and they each cost around $30.

I’m a moderate in so many things, one neither into abstinence nor excess, and such is so with alcohol. I am neither a teetotalist nor a dipsomaniac. Or to put it another way, I’ve never seen parched mirages or sozzled pink elephants.

I’ve never been into the bar scene, either. In the past, co-workers have invited me out to join them in happy hour but convivial watering holes aren’t my thing.

The Bible speaks of a little wine being good for one’s spirits. Christ Jesus drank wine. So do I. I usually have a glass with supper or as an aperitif. Always red. The blanc de blancs doesn’t agree with my breadbasket. White wine usually gives me cramps and I’m one of those weirdos who can’t stand the taste of champagne.

I like a few liqueurs and a snifter of brandy on occasion but am not into the co-mingling with spirits. Irish cream on the rocks is a fave cordial of mine. Sometimes if I can’t sleep, a nightcap helps.

For the past year or so I’ve been trying different red wines from around the world: from Italy, France, Argentina, Australia, etc. (For years I was in a rut, always buying the same old cabernet.) Most of these have been potable. A few have been downright spewable. One bottle that I spent twenty bucks on was so distasteful I poured it down the drain. It provided me with a valuable lesson, though: Always read the description on the label when trying out a wine you’re unfamiliar with. This one had coffee and dark chocolate in it. I like both of these, just not in wine.

I also want to learn more about cocktails and how to make them. I’ve tried a few in restaurants and for the most part they’ve been delicious. Especially when they’re served with a maraschino cherry. Shaken or stirred, I’m no James Bond. So long as it comes with a swizzle stick and is drinkable, I’m happy.

As for the expression “spirits” in reference to liquor: From what I’ve learned, it’s a slangy derivation that likens the bottle to the body of a human being, each of which are thought to contain a spirit housing their respective containers. In some parts of the world, empty beer bottles are referred to as “dead soldiers.” Go figure.

Your post did make me chuckle.
Lots of nice drinks menioned too. I'm with you on the red wine!
Makes sense that explanation of the body holding the spirit like a bottle.
