Is there a difference between a thought and a memory
As I have begun meditating one idea is to rid the mind of thoughts. But I have noticed sometimes that an old memory will drop suddenly into my mind. It doesn't feel like a thought, only an old experience.

I think the meditation mainly pertains to what is actually being experienced now just as you experience it, and there is a difference between the experience which is happening now and the memory of a experience that happened in the past. You know it is the mind revisiting a past experience and that experience is not current, therefore it a thought of a experience, and not the lived experience what is happening now. Meditation can awaken the memory as well. In the sense that the memory is happening now, you are conscious of 'what's going on', and of course, the memory comes up and soon it passes away...

Yes there is a difference between a thought and a memory, as memories are not restricted to thoughts. All of our senses are involved with our memories. We can remember how something feels, or tastes, or smells, etc., and smells, tastes, etc ., can trigger memories. But thoughts are images in our heads which may come in either pictures or words; we can think about our memories but our memories do not have to include our thoughts.

Memories are thoughts of the past which are not always true

I often have this too but they are not memories I remember. Usually flashes of faces or places i don't recall but quite vivid.
