One film which no one has mentioned yet is the 1950's version of A Christmas Carol with Alistair Sims. The B&W really captures the flavour of the story.

Fantastic flick. At the end of the story, when his soul is filled with joy for that young boy after he comes to the realization that his heart can save his life through generosity and a genuine concern for other human beings. Which we all are.

I would say ITS A WONDERFUL LIFE (1946)

My #2 pick would be CASABLANCA (1942)

La Haine. A day in the life of three youths in the deprived suburbs of Paris. Stylised, and depicts a situation and subculture the world didn’t know much about at the time.
