Only if they want to communicate. Just as you give permission to them, they must give permission as well.

I often wonder if there's a certain amount of time that may be needed after they've passed for them to come through... Is this correct?

Depends on the spirit, as Kon said, they too must give permission and if they don't feel ready or want to talk quite yet, they won't.

Yes you can, for many years after started receiving messages from one wise spirit every night I thanks God for giving me the abiity of being able to communicate with the spirits of my love ones that are not longer with us in this physical life.
I communicate with both of my parents couple uncles once and with two of my grandfathers.
I have been told that some of them are in another level and it is not possible to call them all the time.
Have faith and you will be able to do it.

Of course it's okay to ask this! It's a harmless and good question. I am pretty sure you can and I would imagine it
would be easier to channel someone you knew rather than someone you never met in your waking physical life.

Of course, this can be done. I do find however, that it's much more difficult to channel my own family members as I am too subjective to get a really good, accurate reading. I already know too many details, you know?

what you get from them will hopefully fill you with there love !
