I do both. During the cooler months i hit the treadmill and focus on incline running while during the warmer months i run outdoors and use the treadmill.

When i was younger i use to be more of that "hardcore" runner. Running in the rain or cold. Now my knee joints stiffens when i run in the cold for long and becomes more prone to injury. I still can run in extreme heat. If you want hardcore running you can buy a weighted vest (20 or 40 lbs). Or buy a full body sauna suit (not those cheap ones at the sporting good stores. A good one would cost about over $100 dollars and are found online. I recommend: titleboxing.com). If you really want to challenge yourself you can use the full body sauna suit and put the weighted vest on top of that. That would really challenge your endurance and improve your speed. I use to do this in the Florida summer heat in broad daylight. It dramatically improved my endurance and speed. It also challenged my mental toughness as the urge to quit can come 20 or 30 mins into it. But keep going.

Outdoor running is better as it helps to breath fresh air. When weather is not good then you can go for treadmill.
