I think it depends on how it's interpreted, and of course the image in which the quote is presented.

Personally speaking, I think it's very positive. As much as I enjoy the company of others, I find being alone is when I have my most profound spiritual growth.

Also, sometimes acting like you don't need others, is freeing. When you are needy, you are dependent on the good will of someone else for approval, or love, or anything in general. Of course, most everyone living, depend on others to one degree or another, just to exist in the world.

Maybe those people just saw the surface.
