The investigation Krishnamurthy talks of usually begins with the logical or we may say, analytical as a contemplation transitioning thereafter to an orientation meditational or observational to just look at the root cause of agitation or need for the inquiry ... looking without associating consciousness with the emotion surfacing as a result of the thought manifested ... either consciously or subconsciously. The looking may be likened to intuitively cognising both the cause & effect of the thought energy.
