Shielding

Every day we are bombarded by energies and influences. Sometimes it is conscious, sometimes not. Either way, learning to protect one's self from external energies is vital to maintaining a clean and comfortable system. This necessity is doubled or greater for those with empathic or telepathic abilities as the psychic senses can easily be overwhelmed.

A warning is needed before proceeding: Shields can become addictive. So much so that many psions eventually have permanent shields up and find it difficult to remove them. Poorly placed or programmed shields can have an adverse effect on sensory abilities, chakra flows and other energy practices. Thus, just as important as learning to raise a shield is learning to lower it.

There are several different methods for creating a shield. I will outline four different methods here:

1) Oozing. Chose one part of your body, usually either the top of the head, bottom of the feet or the center of your body. From there visualize a drop of light hovering just above your skin. Visualize it grow and spread, creating a shining surface of light. Spread the light over your entire body until you are completely covered.

2) Wrapping. Visualize a wide band of light. Apply that band of light to one part of your body and wrap it around yourself. Continue to do so, wrapping the endless band of light over your whole body until you are completely mummified.

3) Fitting. Visualize a glowing circle of light surrounding you from all sides. That glow intensifies, getting stronger and brighter. When it can’t get any brighter, allow it to bend and approach you from all sides until it rests right next to your skin in your own form.
*NOTE* Fitting is more successful if made from an Energy Ball which you have grown to surround you from all sides.

4) Externalizing.
Start in one part of your body. Visualize a glow growing from inside that part of the body. When it becomes intense enough, push it outside of your skin and allow it to rest just on top of it. Move your consciousness throughout your body and repeat it for every part until you are completely surrounded.
*NOTE* Externalizing is more successful if used as an extension of Fortification.

After creating a shield you may want to ‘smooth’ it. This is especially useful after a Wrapped or Externalized Shield. Simply pass your consciousness over every part of your shield and imagine that it melts together, filling in any holes you may have missed or seams you inadvertently created.

While smoothing make sure that all parts of your body are covered, including above your head and under your feet.

Effect of Shielding

Shielding effectively creates a barrier which slows or stops energy from passing through, depending on the shield’s strength and intention. A basic shield without any special intention will prevent all energy from passing through. This can be both a benefit and a hindrance.

On the one hand, it can protect you from negative entities or other psions who mean to attack you or feed off of your energy. Even if it doesn’t prevent it entirely, having a shield will make it less worthwhile for a negative entity to feed off of you and generally that is enough to make them go away. It will also reduce the amount of energy pollution you pick up from the ambient energy which pervades every part of this world.

On the other hand, shielding reduces the effectiveness of your psychic senses, dulling your perceptions of the spiritual reality which lies outside of your self. This can be a benefit for one who is hyper-sensitive or naturally empathic or a hindrance for one attempting to train one’s senses.

Maintaining Shields

Shields naturally fade over time unless they are being maintained.

In order to maintain it with your mind you must train your subconscious to constantly supply your shield with the required amount of energy. Just like with muscle memory, repetition is key. At first you must constantly be aware of your shield and periodically smooth it out or re-energize it. Eventually this tedious task will become second nature and will occur all on its own.

Lowering Shields

There are times when you will want to lower your shields and be in a more receptive state. As stated before, shielding dulls the spiritual senses and makes it more difficult to practice energy manipulation. Thus, whenever you are taking part in a training session you may want to lower your shields partially or fully.

Alternately, there are times where you don’t want your energy to be guarded. For example, if you are allowing a person to enter your system to heal you or to read your energy, or you simply want to connect to a person on a deeper level without any boundaries between you.

One should begin practicing how to lower one’s shields very soon after learning how to raise them. As with raising shields there are many techniques for lowering them. I will present four here, as above.

1) Melting. Choose a starting point. Be aware of your shield there. Then, create a point of blackness. Allow this blackness to spread, melting your shield as it passes over your entire body. When it reaches the final point, instead of melting the last section of energy, disconnect it and push it away from you.

2) Peeling. Make an incision in your shield. Reach in and pull off a strip of your shield. Keep pulling it off and allow it to unravel your entire shield, forming a ball of energy from the shield which you are removing. Then, once you have gathered all of that energy into a ball, ground it or push it away from you.

3) Release. Move over your entire body, or attempt to become aware of the entire surface of your body at once. As you do so, slowly detach your shield from your skin, expanding it until it forms a sphere around you. Then, pierce a hole in one part of the sphere and gather up all the energy on the other side of it. Take this energy and either ground it, or simply push it away.

4) Fading. Move over your entire body, or attempt to become aware of the entire surface of your body at once. As you do so, feel for the shield hovering over it and imagine that it darkens and fades, as if turning down a dimmer switch. After your entire shield has faded, release the remnant residue and allow it to float away from you.

Strengthening Shields

The shields of a novice will be weak at best. It should be enough to deter negative entities from approaching and to dull the senses and the gathering of pollution into your energy body. Most of the time, a weak shield is good enough, especially if you wish to remain somewhat sensitive to the spiritual world.

There are times, however, where you will want an even stronger shield. For example, if you know you are being attacked, if you are around a large crowd or an especially malevolent energy source or if you just really want to be left alone.

There are three basic methods to strengthening the shield around you.

First, you can lower your existing shield and then put up a new one using a deeper level of concentration and drawing down even more energy. If you do not wish to lower your shields as you raise a new one then you can attempt to do both at once, slowly replacing your existing shield with a new one. This is the best method but the most time consuming one.

Second you can become aware of your shield as with a regular maintenance operation and infuse your shield with even more energy than it was initially designed with. This is good for a temporary fix but you will find that your shield will be more comfortable at its originally designated energy level and will very quickly fade back to it when you remove your concentration from it.

Third, you can simply create another shield over top of your original one. Layering shields is more difficult to perform as you are already less sensitive to the energies outside of your existing shield and it will require you to be aware and maintain more than one shield at a time. Still, it will last longer than infusing your shield with excess energy.

Adverse Effects of Shields

You may find that your shields are having an adverse effect on your energy body. If so this means you are not shielding correctly. We will go through the two main problems that arise from shielding. Note that some people have natural shields and can find these adverse effects occurring in certain parts of their body for the same reason. Removing the natural shields around that area and reconstructing them correctly will generally solve the problem.

Cinching occurs when a shield is made too tight. This is usually only found in the limbs and will result in a restricted flow of energy to the extremities. If one or more of your extremities are perpetually cold or underdeveloped (ie. Large fatty bicep but smaller forearm and weak hands) then this may be because of a cinching shield. The way to correct it is to make the shield looser and further from the body.

Pooling of energy in a certain place may occur if a shield is too thick in a certain area, or if a plate shield is found there for extended period of time. Pooling of energy will result in an area which feels warmer yet weaker than the rest of your body as the energy remains there and stagnates. If untreated it may cause bruising or irritation of the skin or knotting to occur in the muscles. The way to correct this problem is to either remove a plate shield or smooth out a lumpy shield to make it more even.

Intermediate Level Shielding

There is so much that can be done with shields and there are so many different modifications that can be made to them. First we will go over different kinds of personal shields, then warding an area and finally creating a sacred space.

Plates/Spot-Shielding

Until now we have discussed shielding your whole body as this is the easiest kind of shield to make. Creating a shield around a specific part of your body or leaving a specific area unshielded is more difficult because as a rule energy does not like straight edges.

In order to create a shield around a specific part of your body you will need to meld the edges of the shield to your energy body. For example, if you wanted to shield your hand you would use one of the above described methods to create a shield but stop at the wrist. Then, take the edge of the shield at the wrist and gently extend it inwards and partly down your arm so that it blends in with your internal energy. Use the same method for any location. If you want to shield your stomach, create a slightly concave shield around it then move around all the edges and extend it inwards and away from the shield so that it blends in with your energy body there.

Note that plates should only be used occasionally and not for an extended duration as it can cause energy to pool in the areas which are shielded.

Anchoring

The simplest way to maintain a shield is to have your subconscious do so. Alternately you can anchor a shield to an object in order to have that object maintain it, or in order to use that object as an access point. This is especially useful for Warding an area as will be discussed below.

The best object to use as an anchor is a large crystal, especially Amethyst. It is best to have the intention to anchor your shield present from the moment you begin to construct it. Clutch your anchoring point in one hand and keep part of your mind on it every step of the way. After finishing the shield, visualize a cord of light extending from your shield to the anchoring point. Extend this chord into the object and fill the object with it. Cause energy to flow up and down the chord several times in order to fortify the bond.

Then you will want to Ground the object so that a constant stream of energy will flow through it into your shield. Regular maintenance is still required but with far less frequency. This maintenance will consist of refortifying the bond and your anchoring point’s grounding channel. Be aware when you maintain your shield that negative energy may get trapped in your anchoring point and so you may need to cleanse it once in a while as well.

If you do not want your shield to recharge itself automatically then you can skip the grounding step. Regular maintenance of your shield will then consist of clutching the anchoring point and sending energy through it to the rest of your shield.

In order to lower this kind of shield you will first have to sever the channel leading to the anchor and then lower the shield like normal.

It is also possible to program your shield to ground itself and avoid the need to anchor it to an object but you should do so with extreme caution as it is far more difficult to break this kind of ground and lower this kind of shield.

Filtering

Creating a shield with regular intent will create a shield which blocks energy travelling in both directions indiscriminately. With special intent it is possible to program your shield to only block certain kinds of energy or only stop energy travelling in one direction. For example you can create a shield to block out only a specific person’s energy frequency, or to only prevent ambient energy from passing through or one which will only prevent energy from entering and not from leaving.

Consistency and Shapes

Creating a shield with regular intent will create a shield which is smooth and partially malleable. With special intent it is possible to create other shapes and consistencies as well.

A shield’s consistency is either Hard or Soft. The harder a shield the more energy it will prevent from passing through but the more brittle and easy to break it will become. Also you may find that with a hard shield your limbs become fatigued more easily as if there is extra resistance present with every motion. If someone attacks a hard shield forcefully it will break and shatter or get holes punched through it.

The softer a shield is the less energy it can prevent from passing through but the more reactive it will be. Soft shields are better for preventing big bulky energies from passing through as it will bend and shift to accommodate then push away such energies. Ambient energy will be able to stick to such a shield and slowly seep through, however.

Shields can be made to take on different shapes and attitudes as well. A smooth shield is a neutral shape and will not cause any kind of negative reactions to those who interact with it. A person may also make a spiky shield which will cause people and entities discomfort when coming in contact with it. Shields can be made darker and more imposing with sharp angles and shapes to scare people away or with soft moving swirls to attract people towards it. Shields can be made extremely thick but more airy to create an air of mystery and soften but not stop energy from passing through, blurring contact or they can be made strong and thin to give an air of professionalism and stoicism.

Experiment with different shapes, colours and consistencies in order to find the shield which is best suited to your desires.

Piercing Shields

Occasionally you will want to open up a certain section of a shield you will have created temporarily. There are three general methods for doing so: Piercing, Slicing and Pealing.

Piercing consists of making a tiny hole in a shield then expanding the hole in every direction, forcing the shield to retreat from a specific location. You will need to hold a pierced location open for as long as you desire it and letting go will cause the shield to come back to it’s place. You may want to smooth out the shield afterwards just to be sure.

Slicing acts in the same way as piercing except instead of making a hole you cut a line in the shield and then push it away from both directions. It is useful when you want to open up an area temporarily. As with piercing, letting go of a hole you create will cause the shield to resume its previous state. Unlike with piercing, you must smooth the shield afterwards as the incision line will remain and cause discomfort.

Pealing consists of creating two or three incisions and then peeling back the energy. A pealed shield will not return to its previous state when released but will stay in its pealed state until returned or a length of time passes. It is very important that you close up a pealed shield once you are finished and that you smooth out all of the incisions as extreme discomfort can result.

Warding

Up ‘til now we have discussed personal shields. Now we will discuss creating a shield outside of yourself, also called a ‘ward’. Wards are no more complicated to create than personal shields but it is slightly more difficult to confirm their creation. Wards work best when there are physical boundaries which line up with the energetic boundaries you are creating but it is also possible to ward an area without any physical boundaries whatsoever.

If warding a rectangular area then you will need to begin by creating a shield on each of the six sides independently. It is important that you not forget to ward the floor and ceiling as well. Then smooth out all of the edges and corners, rounding them slightly to make a less sharp shape. As previously stated, energy does not like sharp edges. If warding an area with physical boundaries you can use these boundaries as a partial anchor to keep your ward in place. Otherwise you will have to be very specific in delineating the area which your ward is to be placed in.

You can maintain a warded area in the same way as a personal shield but it is slightly more difficult as the this type of shield is not anchored to your self. For a temporary warding you can simply create it and let it stay without maintenance for a short while. For a more permanent warding it is strongly advised to anchor it to an object. Otherwise you will need to maintain it at least once a day while you are in close proximity to it.

Sacred Space

A Sacred Space is the name for a location which has been warded, cleansed and infused with a certain type of energy. Warding has already been discussed. Cleansing an area is much the same as cleansing an aura and consists of removing all the undesired energy from within a warded area. Infusing a sacred space means drawing energy into the area either from your self through a ground or by raising up energy from the ground/sky into the warded area directly.

In order to force energy to leave or enter a warded area it is beneficial to pierce one of the walls and push the energy out through the resulting hole.

great guide. my only problem with it and every other shield or construct faq.
is it all visualization base. its not that i cant visualize. thats just not the way i handle energy. its all tactile for me. i had to figure out how to make an energy ball. w/o picturing it in my mind but keeping the intent str8. i must naturally shield because i havnt needed them. but last time i was in a crowded bar. it felt like to much at first, then i got used to all these people being around and alive, doing stuff.

Visualize is a deceptive word - visualization can be done with any of the senses, not just visual. I don't know if there's a better word for it (sensialize?)

I also mostly work through touch, or just through 'sensing'. Try replacing the word 'visualize' with 'imagine through touch' and you'll arrive at the exact same effect.

And thank you for your criticism, I'll try to find a way to make it more universal. Do you think if I replaced the word 'visualize' with 'imagine' it would be more understandable?

Interesting guide, I made something similar a while back for beginners, but in hinsight it was only a vague referance and a guideline for people to bend and change for themselves, a starting point. This guide is a little more specialised.

Lots of guides cater to some styles but not others, in the end there's probably not going to be a perfect guide considering everyone is so diverse. I like the multitude of options in this one.

mightything, Lots of people opperate via different senses, some physical (scent, taste, touch...etc) and others metaphysical (clairvoyance, energy reading...etc) and even others opperate mentally (visualisation, lucid dreaming..etc.) Some ways are more well catered to some methods and ways of functioning than others so sometimes a bit of experamentation is neccissary to get your own "style" and most efficient way of doing things.

I find that a good way to check and create shields for people who opperate tactily in the beginning is to extend your arm and feel the resistance of the shield and the energy of it forming there, over time you get accustomed to sensing it more strongly and can also check the shield over anhd alter it manually by laying hands on its inner or outer walls and using intentions and the feel of the energy inside the body changing and "binding" or affecting the shield as a focus point.

Oddly enough, I've found that lots of people have trouble visualising or imagining because their instincts or subconscious has a hard time converting what they are creating in their minds as an energetic affect. It's not anything bad or wrong, its just that some people prefer to work directly with energies, while others prefer to work at a distance within their mind to gain the same affect.

Thats often why a lot of people have trouble with step-by-step guides and such as well.

Anyhow, getting off topic. Nice work.

i hope i didnt come off as un impressed by this article. even if i feel i cant use everything in it. its def got me back into thinking about shielding. and it was jammed packed full of useful info. my sole complaint was more like a long term whine of mines. its kinda up to me find a way to integrate this knowledge into my custom system.

Sangress, i see you.
i would say i handle it with a cross between my physical senses and my mental ones.
even though my awareness does the heavy lifting and my body reacts. i also notice that sometimes i watch what im doing. so even though i dont visualize my mind will somtimes/most times give me a visual of what im doing.

i feel like shielding and other constructs are prolly what i should focus on to gain more control. and honestly energy balls are fun to pass around. but makes me kinda feel like a parlor trickster (but not to much)
i like to talk to interested people about energy and it helps if they can feel it or touch it.

edit:
not be long winded.
but i do something of a ward. in my head i draw lines of energy i add some visuals to it.
like purple lines of energy. and i create a pentagram. in a circle. with a loved one in the middle. in the tips i put things like prosperity, well being, health, safety. and i try to draw all of the bad things outside the circle and its shield. i call it a ward because i can slap it on a door.
i can cast one on myself and i feel the energies in my feet activate if i draw it under them.
im pretty sure it moves with you to.

I do something very similar but call it "bubbling" instead of shielding.

Very impressive work Yamah, well written.

Its great to see people in this thread sharing their own personal truth and techniques that resonate with them. This "bubbling" sounds interesting and anything that has a pentacle involved peaks my interest thats for sure

My personal preference is to keep it simple so my focus is directed toward amplifying the intent rather than being distracted by the process. It takes all my concentration just to navigate my way through the day, especially the mornings.

thank you for sharing, res. What do you mean about 'amplifying the intent' and 'distracted by the process'? Do you mean use the Affirmation method for shielding (focussing on the intent of 'I AM SHIELDED'), as opposed to consciously using energy?
