My first response was that tobacco is probably easier to obtain than kinnickkinnick. Or, maybe you were thinking more along the lines of that tobacco is used in the pipe to send prayers to the Creator with the smoke--a spiritual ritual that would convey spiritual significance to tobacco.

Um,
I was born in Hamilton, Ontario, and spent my first seven years there before my parents brought me with them to New Zealand.

Grandma, when I was 33, put up the money to bring me back for a month in '95.

In New Zealand I've always known lots of Maori, indigenous, and through my own spiritual growth managed to find lots of ways to encounter Maori and substantiate similarities of a spiritual nature. Might be my Irish surname as the Maori have always been quite fond of the Celts and the similarities between cosmologies. I don't know but I've taken advantage where I can. Also New Zealand has made efforts to incorporate Maori Customs into the natural running of the country. This may seem a little farcical at the top level but on the ground it means things are fairly harmonious and lots of intermingling between races occurs.

Anyways, there I am back in Canada, and that little steelmill town is sick, the land is sick and the people are sick and I don't get how nobody sees this... So I think I better go find some Indians and see what they think. Long story short I couldn't find the Medicine lady at the Six Nations reserve, she was away, but through the mouths of babes I got the answer to the question I went to the "Rez" lookin' for.
At a family barbecue this 3 year old comes up to me, he could hardly speak and was havin' difficulties and seein' specialists, and he comes out with this full sentence in multi syllable words... with my answer. The people know I'm there, they know of the hurt and we're all in this together. Sweet as Bro!!!

So as for proper ways to do things. It's about that but it isn't as well. You'll hear it and you'll feel it and you'll know it when you're on the ground and doin' what you feel you gotta do. People create customs as a kind of shorthand to get stuff done but what's actually underneath those customs is the real important stuff.

It's the land and the trees and that big big sky and all the little critters speakin' to you. Customs and stuff are a way of getting you to swing with that but if you can get there without them. Why not!

It's like the customs are the wrapping and the present is what counts but still it's perplexing when the kids forget about the present and just play with the wrapping!

Man, this is makin' me feel a little homesick for that place in my bones. I've always wanted to go back and do a winter just for the slow restfulness of it all but those big ol' jet planes are just too big and too fast for my liking... it takes too long to recover from the displacement shock... Maybe by boat would work, then train from BC.

Since childhood, I have felt an attachment to Native Americans even though I know in this lifetime there is no family connection. I have tremendous respect for the land, animals and the environment overall and distress about treatment of the tribes by the White settlers.

Only memory is of being an Iroquois brave which came out in a brief group regression. Have "knowing" of three other lifetimes as a male but no memory of which tribe.

I have a number of books with pictures and information about the Old West.
