Ah well, that is a well-discussed question 
Perhaps the answer lies within the change in the star map over time - Thornborough is 5000 years-old, so changes must have happened in that time BUT the henges are clearly visible from the North Yorks Moors escarpment and were originally clad in gypsum. So, clearly visible from the air !

This same astronomical alignment (Orion's constellation) can be found at the Great Pyramids of Egypt, the pyramids of Teotihuacan, the pyramids of Xian, & also at the sites of the Hopi tribe in Arizona. Yes. I read the banks of the hedges were originally gypsum (gypsum crystal) according to archeologists excavations that have been done at the central henge.
