Safest Affordable Essential Oils with Good Strong Smells

After learning about how toxic most everyday air freshener sprays you find in the store are, I'm looking into making my own air fresheners with essential oils. Articles online simply say to mix several drops of essential oil and water into a mist spray bottle, so I bought 0.5 oz of 100% Tangerine essential oil, dropped all of it (about 200 drops) into 16 oz of water in a mist spray bottle, and the resulting smell after several spritzes around the room wasn't strong at all, almost no smell.

I'm guessing I need a stronger-smelling essential oil, so could you please recommend some safe and affordable essential oils with nice potent smells?

Thank you!

Tangerine is quite a strong smelling oil... first question first... did you shake it well before spraying? Otherwise you'd be spraying plain water into the air.

4 drops of essential oil can fragrance our whole house if used in a burner. Really, you shouldn't need much.

I would recommend a burner too.

Sometimes if I'm busy though, I like a quick spritz... but, even though I'm qualified in aromatherapy, I find the ready made pillow spray from boots works just as good, and isn't too expensive.

They do say that less is more :)

AromaWeb has a little section on using reeds to diffuse oils: http://www.aromaweb.com/recipes/aromatherapy-essential-oils-reed-diffuser-recipes.asplink

Personally, I'd go along with my book, which says to avoid using oils too often. A natural incense or a resin is a good alternative, and then there's a few blends which can be used to deal with odours ~ to be used in a spray bottle with water
