Suggestion: If we paid more attention to the well-being of us-as-dream-characters, our inner-selves who dream us would start paying more attention to the well-being of us-as-awake-characters.

I practice conscious-sleep whereby one can watch dream-formation from start to finish. One can indeed learn a lot by paying more attention to dreams.

How he got this knowledge / ideas is subject of speculation. Some say that he may have learned from some Far Eastern teaching how to get in trance (meditate). This allowed him to get in touch with his inner source of knowledge and guidance (maybe what is called the Holly Ghost), his inner-self being his Father.

Disclaimer: It isn't my intention to offend any faithful, I just express opinions, mostly based on my spiritual aha-s. You BigJohn, by opening this discussion, brought to my attention some direct quotes from JC' teachings, and they were a revelation for me. Thanks.

Thanks for sharing your perspective.

NOTE: The Gospel of Thomas was never canonized.

GOSPEL OF THOMAS
VERSES 10-12

(10) Jesus said,
"I have cast fire upon the world, and look, I am watching it until it blazes."

(11) Jesus said,
"This heaven will pass away, and the one (heaven) above it will cease to be.
The dead are not alive, and the living will not die.
In the days when you consumed what was dead, you made it alive.
When you dwell in the light, what will you do?
On the day when you were one, you became two.
But when you become two, what will you do?"

12) The disciples said to Jesus,
"We know that you will depart from us.
Who will be our leader?"

Jesus said to them,
"Wherever you are, you should go to James the Just, for whose sake heaven and earth came into being."

GOSPEL OF THOMAS
VERSE 13

13. Jesus said to his disciples,
"Compare me to something and tell me whom I am like."

Simon Peter said to him,
"You are like a just messenger, (Angel)."

Matthew said to him,
"You are like a wise philosopher."

Thomas said to him,
"Teacher, my mouth cannot say what you are like."

Jesus said,
"I am not your master. Because you have drunk, you have become intoxicated from the bubbling spring that I have poured out."

And he took him, and withdrew, and spoke three things to him. When Thomas came back to his friends, they asked him,
"What did Jesus tell you?"

Thomas said to them,
"If I tell you one of the things he told me, you will pick up rocks and stone me, and fire will come from the rocks and burn you up."

GOSPEL OF THOMAS
VERSE 14 -

(14) Jesus said to them,

If you fast, you will bring forth sin to yourselves,
and if you pray, you will be condemned,
and if you give to charity, you will harm your spirits,
and if you go into any land and wander about in the rural areas, and if they take you in,
then eat what is set before you, and heal their sick!

What goes into your mouth will not defile you, but that which comes out of your mouth will defile you."

(15) Jesus said,

"When you see someone who was not born from a woman,
Prostate and worship him.

That one is your Father."

(16) Jesus said,

"People think that I have come to cast peace upon the earth.
They do not know that I have come to cast dissension upon the earth: fire, sword and war.

There will be five in one house.
There will be three against two and two against three.
The father against son and son against father, and they will stand as solitary ones."

Probable future: his words will be misinterpreted, which will manifest in conflicts.

Pointing to inner-realities.

GOSPEL OF THOMAS
  VERSE 18

18) The disciples said to Jesus: "Tell us how our end will be."

Jesus said: "Have you already discovered the beginning that you are now asking about the end?
For where the beginning is, there the end will be.
Blessed is anyone who will take his place at the beginning.
And thereby know the end, and will never taste death."

GOSPEL OF THOMAS
  VERSE 19-20

(19) Jesus said,

"Blessed is he who came into being before he came into being.

If you become my disciples and listen to my sayings, these stones will minister to you.

There are five trees in Paradise for you that do not change between summer and winter, and their leaves never fall. Whoever comes to know them will not die."

(20) The disciples said to Jesus,

"Tell us what the kingdom of heaven is like!"

He said to them,

"It is like a mustard seed. It is the tiniest of all seeds. But when it falls on tilled soil, it produces a large plant and becomes shelter for the birds of the sky."
