I love running outdoors, not a big fan of the gym except in winter lol. Hate running in cold and rain tho... And dogs are always a concern. Running outside also puts me in a state of meditation/ reflection so its a lot better

It's better because you get to be outside, you get to see the sights. You get to experience real terrain, real hills, real dips. You get to, and have to, control your own speed: Sometimes you go slow, sometimes you speed up, sometimes you walk. I always feel better after an outside run than a treadmill. But there are advantages to the treadmill, also. Most notably, they're inside, which is great in the cold.
But the choice you make between running on a treadmill or running outside is pretty much dependent on your preferences. However, if you are looking for a more high resistance power workout then running outdoors is your deal, but if you are looking for ease of use and convenience, then maybe you are more of a treadmill workout person! Either ways, the benefits of both, running on a treadmill and running outdoors are quite similar, with a few alterations here and there. Choose your pick wisely!

I hit the treadmill more in the winter and when it's really hot and humid in the summer. My body doesn't seem able to regulate temperature very well when it's hot so New York summers are not good for me to run in usually. Spring and Fall and I'm outside running. I prefer to run outside when I can.

Treadmill for me every time! I run two or three times a week, sometimes every other day. As well as having a fear or dogs, especially ones that aren't on a lead (why is it they make a beeline for you!) I live in a remote village that is surrounded by quiet country lanes and I just don't feel it's safe for me to run out alone.

Outdoors. I have tried treadmills at gyms or a friend's house but I get totally bored. I like the freedom of movement as OB mentioned and I run, like Clover in any weather condition, rain, snow, sleet, shine, wind, heat, cold...sometimes I enjoy it more in rain and snow because I seem to go somewhere else in my mind easier, like meditation. :-) It's rejuvenating being out in nature running. Supposed to rain all day and I'm psyched about running in the rain. Gotta get moving!

Oh, and I loaded up on these traction thingys (that were on clearance) for my sneakers so I can run on the ice. :-) So handy!

See, this is what I appreciate about Northerners, they are die hard core runners. Rain, shine or snow, they are out there running. I moved to the south, forget about it. There is not a strong running culture here at all, we have our beach runners but no real strong running communities like in my city/area. In all fairness, the weather is hot

I am still vote for outdoors. Treadmill is a good warm up machine for me

Hardcore. lol. ...most are! My running plans got derailed until later this afternoon due to work and then I had a guy coming to fix my chlorinator. I went and by the time I was able, it was pouring out hard...Best part of that was no one was there. Had the whole place to myself. I put on this one running jacket I have because it keeps the rain off...My pants were soaked though and some of the trails were mud. I should have just gone on the road...the road that surrounds the gorge and trail do not get much traffic ...and the roads on the south and north are super steep...! It's a really good work out.

It's so funny to read what you wrote though because the days I have to work in the office I see runners out there in all weather conditions and I'm super jealous!!

They're for different things. If you're intensely training the treadmill allows you things most outdoor running doesn't - continuous running up an incline for instance. For keeping fit, the rise and fall of the terrain is probably enough for variety.

I was talking to a trainee Royal Marine last night who pointed this out.

Lorelyen, this one place I go to I run around the tops of the gorge, I will be going uphill for a time and then run down ad then I do the bottom trail as well which is more flat but the trails are closed due to icy conditions in the winter (although many of us still sneak on them) but if I do the road and I had taken to doing just that..the road is extremely steep. The entire way. Whew...I absolutely hated it but I did it every day and I lost a LOT of weight by using my leg muscles hard on that steep road. I have to say it really kicked my butt into shape. :-) I'm not a road person but here the roads are not traveled much by anyone except for the main road in front...but the roads around the sides are not. And the views are wonderful.
