Focus during meditation

What do you recommend to focus on during meditation? I don't believe in focusing on mantras or breathing. I tend more towards focusing on the self, our awareness or some such. However, when I do this should I focus inwards, outwards or just try and keep an empty mind by zoning out(not focusing either out or in)?

Yep, empty mind sounds good.

Looks like your focus on how to focus is what keeps you from focusing. For me what it works is try to stay as close as posible to the "now". like now.. now.. now... now .. now.. and let what it needs to come in just come in.
Hope it helps :)

Try Mooji meditations on youtube.
He says inside and outside does not matter cause you are awareness
Awareness is inside and outside it just is.
Concentrate on awareness it is inside and outside
Listen to him he explains it better very nice guide mindfulness meditation

Ya know, I have been meditating for 4 decades (and have fabulous experiences,
no more struggles)...and do all of what you said
....focus inward, outward....whatever....I do
focus on my breath, well, not exactly, but
what 'powers' the breathe, what is behind the breath...the Thing
that is breathing me.
I also, do not do mantras....Why? They end...I say focus on that which does NOT
have an ending or a beginning, Ha!

There is a Divine Presence....open to That!
I'm inspiring mySELF, now. Ha!

Prepare yourself for the coming astral journey of death by daily riding in the balloon of God-perception.
Through delusion you are perceiving yourself as a bundle of flesh and bones, which at best is a nest of troubles.
Meditate unceasingly, that you may quickly behold yourself as the Infinite Essence, free from every form of misery. ~Paramahansa's Guru's Guru
