You really need to be more specific about which theology you're talking about. Orthodox Christianity has a different view from, say, Shinto.
But in most people's minds a demon is an evil spirit.

There are many difrent spiritual beings = spirits. But "modern" religions like christianity for example make it very simplify.
Look about older spiritual teachings, lidke for example Theurgy, or Egyptian mysteries by Iamblichus of Chalkis. Is free on the net in pdf.
Or some eastern texts.

There are many different kinds of spirits and demons fit the category of spirits since spirits are noncorporeal. They can be anywhere from Deities, a very high vibe, all the way down to very low vibes to be called demons.
