There are actually 3 different words for "soul" in Hebrew... but that's not the origin of the concept. Animism predates Monotheism, which is the concept that everything has a soul, including people, plants, animals and even rocks and streams... which is parallel to the concept of "Nefesh".
Regarding psychic ability... what determines your degree of musical ability?
Same thing - it's a combination of physical nature, nurture (childhood experiences) and your soul alignment.

Ok, but even before that, many ancient religious/spiritual beliefs knew of the soul or what some called "spirit" of all living creatures. The Egyptians first come to mind with their "Ba" or "Ba Bird" symbol. |

Interesting.
Although I dearly hope that rocks don't have souls. I would hate to fail God's judgment for "killing" all those rocks I've broken apart while out mineral collecting.
