Where did this theory arise from and from whence has it gained prominence?

I believe the concept of the Twin Flame theory originated from the Greek philosopher Plato...

I never researched it or knew about it as such before I met the man who I consider to be my twin. Therefore, for me it will never be a "theory" because I have lived the reality of it for the past five years.

The twin flame theory is a theory... it is a collection of concepts which attempt to explain a phenomenon. A phenomenon which is beyond what one can understand or believe or conceptualize... So, the fact that it is indeed simply a theory has nothing to do with the authenticity of one's experience. They are though two separate things. Good to keep that in mind.
As for you original question OP, as two posters said above, Plato and Rumi come to mind for me. You might be interested in reading about Sri Aurobindo and The Mother. I believe they were a pair of twin flames.

There are also references within the book of Genesis. Adam and Eve are (In some circles) referred to as twin flames because of there love of creation in all things. There's no direct term of twin flames in the bible but Adam and Eve are ascended Masters. You might like to take into account the image of man. This may be the first reference to the reflection created when we connect spiritually to each other where we see a reflection of our true nature within another.
