hearing noises in old houses

How does one know the difference between natural noises and creaking sounds that an old house makes and visits from spirits or ghosts ?

The house I grew up in as a child, was an old house with lots of noises ...stairs always creeking, etc, especially at night. Just thinking back on it now, after reading some of the threads in this forum... makes me wonder if there were actually 'visitors' in the house and not just my imagination ? I will never really know for sure, just curious now .... thinking back.

and why does one only hear the noises at night ?

I have listened to my house and the noises it makes. If we hear something out of the ordinary, we investigate to find the source before we jump to conclusions. As a child, tho, I wouldn't have. On my recordings, the house sounds are very noticeable and much different than when the spirits make an appearance. But, sometimes it is hard to distinguish, so we don't count that as spirit activity. You can hear it during the day too, but night time is quiet and you can pick up more.

hi onetruebeliever, thanks. I remember you speaking of house noises. Not sure if I asked you before, but are you talking about using a tape recorder or some other kind of gadget ?

I have heard raps on the wall, and I know what those sound like, now and that wasn't anything I remember hearing in the old house. And I know old houses move, and radiators make strange noises too.

Another reason I am wondering now is .... that not long ago, someone took some pictures of the house inside and showed them to me. And I didn't say anything but on the stairway wall, I could actually see a face !

At night when it is dark, our ears are more important, thus we tune into sounds more.

Things cool and shrink at night, so Make noises. Often you don't register the noises during the day because you know they are so mundane. When you worry you hear a lot more. The window bangs shut in day you know it's the wind, at midnight you are not so sure

Every noise i ever heard in an old house was .......
one of my devious relatives sneaking around ...... or me sneaking around!

But ONE!

One noise was different ......
One noise no one else could hear ......
For ONE hour sometime around midnight the loudest noise i ever heard roared through my head....... the first noise ..... the OHM roar~

My house is full of odd noises. Banging , thumping, the other day like a plate being smashed right next to me. Never found out what it was. It doesn't bother me and I get creeped out really easily so pretty sure it's not a poltergeist. Just one of those weird things

i grew up in an old house too with creaky stair noises at night. when i asked my dad about it, he told me it is due to the temperature change that happens. i dont know if he was right or not, but it made me feel better.
