The Power of Yet - An Eye-Opening Video
I came across this TED talk last month and it just blew me away. If only all schools could implement this. What is presented here (also in her book, Mindset) could change your life or the life of someone you know.

Maybe these trends emphasize too much form over substance.
In almost all the fields of human activity, you can't really hypnotize yourself into succeeding without putting in the work, and having the biological potential.

This is not a trend. Nor does it emphasize too much form over substance. Perhaps it seems that way in the short talk that she gave but there is a lot more to it than what she presented. Her findings came over many years of research and studies (done at Columbia University where she used to teach and at Stanford, where she works now). I agree with part of what you said that “you can't really hypnotize yourself into succeeding without putting in the work, …” That’s not what she is saying at all. She never said anything to the effect that it’s simple, quick, or something you can achieve by repeating positive thoughts to yourself (as you are implying by comparing it to hypnosis). In fact, it was the opposite. In the school examples she gave, she said that the under-performing students improved their grades/test scores dramatically by the end of the school year – not a week or a month. The results didn’t just come from teachers praising students’ efforts, either. Dweck and her team created a computer program for schools to use that trains students to keep trying, to put more effort into their work, instead of giving up when it got hard. That’s how they were able to improve their grades (this was not in her talk, but on the Mindset program website). However, I disagree with the last part of your statement though, that the person needs the biological potential to succeed. That’s exactly what Dweck’s research has disproven and what she pointed out in her talk.
