I've been reading a number of books on the issue:
Life After Life by Dr. Raymond A Moody,
Near Death Experiences - the rest of the story by PMH A****er,
Journey of Souls by Michael Newton, Ph.D., and yet to read,
Science and the Near Death Experience by Chris Carter.
From these various sources, as well as clues picked up by reading Robert Monroe's books, and what Mellen-Thomas has to say about his own near death experience, I am inclined to think that when the body-machine stops, the soul leaves. There is no point for it to stay. And then of course there are those cases where the doctors manage to reactivate the physical and the soul is drawn back in and it's out of those that we've been fortunate enough to learn just a bit about what may be expected when we make the transition individually.

Personally I have never encountered a corpse with a soul still within it. I don't quite know how that would work.
However I have however seen spirits hoovering (in the room, walking around) their ol' house (body) and I have seen spirits attending their funeral. Oliviasang

Death is something none of us can detail for we have not been dead.

To my way of thinking, the soul is only the soul while it is in the body, when the body dies, no soul, that's why we say, a living soul.

I hope not and after seeing responses, I'm sad if they do. I always felt that the body is your flesh, it gets put into the ground or ashes are sent on their way or in an urn.
To think that our soul would stay under ground brings immense sadness to my heart.
Its not so bad if the ashes are scattered overseas and its a beautiful place?
Staying with the body tells me the person has serious unresolved issues.
What would the purpose be for a soul to stay with its dead body?
