Yes, for a decade I was a serious on-line gamer and met many people, some of those friendship transcended the gaming environment and we emailed and skyped and about 15 of them I've met in person, and a few of those have turned into deep friendships which may last the rest of our lives and include our families.
Many people have faded away as well. It takes a strong connection and mutual effort to keep any friendship alive and well - on-line or in person.

That's true it does take effort to keep any relationship alive. Friendships are actually easier than romantic relationships that way, more free flowing , given people make the effort and invest into it.
