When my son was fairly young, we lived in an apartment that had a nice long balcony and one day, we had a couple of creatures decided to make it their home.

In the small space between our driveway and the cinderblock wall separating our apartment from the neighbors grew a clump of maybe 3 yucca trees.* They started to push up the cement driveway, so the owner had them cut down and totally removed.* Not long afterwards, maybe within a week's time or so, we spied a big unique looking spider making her rather large web extending from the eave to the top of the railing.* A few days later, a second spider was building her home right next to the first one, whom we ended up naming her Elvira (the first one).* I don't recall what name we gave the second one.

We spent most of our free time sitting on the balcony watching them do their magic.* Sadly, after they had really put down stakes and everyone was comfy cozy, a crow flew in to grab the first spider.* I happened to be standing right on the other side, and the crow backed off and flew away.* A day or two later, I was standing inside the glass doors and thought I saw the crow make off with Elvira.* I stepped out onto the balcony and looked to the left and the crow was devouring her in a big tree next door.* Easy to assume the second one suffered the same fate.

I've tried to find the type of spiders they were on-line but haven't found anything like them.* They may have been the last of their kind.* They were big, broad, kind of flat looking with legs you could hardly make out looking at their backs always to us.* It was long ago, but I swear that they were bigger than a quarter across their backs.* Can't forget that experience, ever.

Hi Silver and thank you for sharing the story as they're most welcome. Sorry to hear what happened to the spiders and I hope you see their kind again as they can be elusive. I think it's cute that you gave them names.

I was just out for a walk, it's humid and raining lightly here atm, i noticed a few very big huntsmans (thats a type of spider) out and about on peoples fences, anyway there was one huntsman i saw who had some bug/beetle type insect in it's grip. It was eating or wrapping it up in web or what ever they do, but as it was doing this the beetle was struggling to be free, i didn't know what to do? do you save the beetle from the spider? but then the spider will go hungry right? or do you just let it be? i decided to save the beetle, i picked up a near by stick and gently poked the beetle trying to pry it from the spiders mouth, the spider then quickly scurried away with the beetle.. sorry beetle i tried, may your next reincarnation be a great one!

I took out a book I've had for some time that was sitting on a shelf. It's an encyclopedia of magical creatures. I looked up spider and there's some mythical stories attached to it so I thought I'd share a bit of it.

The spider is one of the great creating creatures, feared and respected the world over. As the weaving goddess of fate, she makes the web of all life, spinning the thread from her own abdomen, stretching through time and space.
In both Greek and Norse myth, the spider is associated with the weavers of fate, the Moirae and the Norns. In Africa and the Caribbean, the spider is associated with Anansi the Trickster.

Hello

I don't mind spiders in my home, they feed off of insects and prefer to stick around one spot at a time, preferably around corners or windows.

I like the symbolic meaning of the spider:

"The spider is an ancient symbol of mystery, power and growth. We take our first lesson from the ancient symbol of the spider by contemplating its web. Just as the spider weaves a web, so too must we weave our own lives. The spider symbol meaning here serves as a reminder that our choices construct our lives."
