When a person has been victimized their instincts become distorted - they continue to be on high alert/survival mode, highly sensitive to general remarks, strike quickly & many times misterpret/misjudge words or actions as well as imagine a perceived threat due to fear ...

Whoa, LivingKarma--some very absolutist opinions stated here! I have to disagree as well.
My mother was schizophrenic from her early 30s on (until 96). She was a very empathetic, emotionally in-tune person when she was not triggered. She was the person I spoke to about life, problems with life, other people, work.
In fact, I got 30 pages of records from when she was hospitalized. The psychiatrist noted that during group therapy she was quiet but could offer very insightful comments about other people (but did not allow herself to participate--nor have insights into her own problems).
So, I know this generalization does not hold up in all cases. I doubt any generalization does. And I feel these attitudes can be very harmful to those who suffer. They have enough issues without society have predispositions that they are violent and non-empathetic.
Some sensitivity training indicated here, Karma!
