Meditation is the easiest way to communicate and build a working relationship with your spiritual team, be they a specific teaching guide for mediumship development, and/or helpers, as well as your loved ones and friends who do continue to have an interest in your life.

I alternately refer to my guides as my "cosmic team" and my "friends on high". They always respond in some fashion when I ask for guidance or assistance, and they can use any number of ways to do so. The possibilities are endless! I have sensed the presence of these loving beings throughout my life. Some call them angels, others guides, but it matters not how we label them. They come and go in one's life as needed (for example at a very difficult time when you are dealing with specific issues, you might pull in a guide who stays only for the duration of that event), but I believe there is one that is with you always, from the time souls were first cast and you first took expression as an individualized aspect of the god-head or Divine Oneness. I'm very grateful for the presence of these loving elevated souls. They have rendered phenomenal teachings and supported me through the worst of all possible times. To them I express my deep and profound gratitude!

I think of my 'guides' as my spirit friends or mentors. Just as in physical life, we encounter many teachers in various forms, so our spirit mentors make their presence known if/when required. Some people prefer a close working relationship, while others go it alone, knowing there is unconditional support and guidance there if required. Others work on different aspects of their own spirituallity, which may require them never or rarely to have contact with their spirit team.

I have been shown some of the ways we all work together and have lost count of the number of teachers, students and interested spirit individuals (and group energies) who have introduced themselves during my short time working spiritually. I know I have various teams, with specialists attached and what seems to be a management group to keep it all balanced, lol. I regard myself as no one special, simply the one who was chosen to come to Earth this time around. What I learn, they learn. It's a mutual sharing.

The guide I was given recently was a member of my family, going back quite a long way.
He looked so much like my dad.

How nice that must have been for you. I do believe family members often guide us as much as they are allowed to, just like they did when they lived on the earth plane. This imo proves that physical death does not instantly change us, as well as showing that they are aware of what is going on in our lives.

Do they guide or simply try to help us? I find it inappropriate to use the same word 'guide' when we refer to (for example) friends or loved ones in spirit, as we do when we speak of Silver Birch.

There is no reason that the former are necessarily able to give us reliable guidance, even in personal matters.

By contrast, Silver Birch was someone who gave universal guidance.

Would we call a regular teacher 'professor'? Of course not because there is a clear difference between the two in levels of attainment and, by implication, ability.

Why, then, do we stubbornly use 'guide' when we can readily see similarly distinguishable differences?

'Guiding' I would interpret as advising. That is not actual help.
To 'help someone' has a different interpretation on it.

I do agree the word 'guide' is overly used but it can apply to different circumstances, although knowing that there is a difference is what I feel is important.

I personally would never expect any family member or friend to 'guide' me on my spiritual pathway because I know they do not have the knowledge or experience necessary to perform this task. But I do know they have the ability to 'guide' me in the right direction or 'help me' to find the answers for myself, just as they did when they lived here. This doesn't imply they solve any of my challenges, that is my responsibility for I have to still work through issues that come into my life otherwise there is no point in me being here.

Silver Birch said, 'Only a medium has a spirit guide'. This does not imply superiority between people whatsoever. It's about those who work at developing their mediumship and those who choose not to, it simply means the latter has no need for a spirit guide, as they are not intending to develop mediumship. You can guarantee some people will disagree with this comment, but I have no doubt Silver Birch has far more knowledge than any one person here, so I am inclined to believe his words above others.

any tips on how to get in touch with my guide?

What I've gathered is important, is meditation.

I agree that the terminology around this subject is massively confusing. People tend to use terms like guides and guardian angels interchangeably for many different kinds of entities.

Friends and family members who have passed over who come to us in spirit are just that - friends and family members, people who love us and want to offer us comfort and support. They aren't acting as guides, because they don't have the necessary experience or qualification to do it - to call them so is to mix up our friends and our teachers, like expecting the kid who sat next to you in high school to suddenly be qualified to teach a class. Angels are a completely different kettle of fish again, and are much further advanced entities even than guides. I like to think of them as the spiritual security officials - they watch over us, help to heal us and keep us safe, but they aren't involved in all the little events of our lives as guides are. :)

I am one of those fortunate enough to be able to speak with my guides, though it took a lot of practice to be able to do so. Iskandar, while meditating, ask your guide to come beside you (they will usually be on your left) and see if you can feel his/her energy. You can also ask them to try sending messages or images to you and practice receiving them. It's definitely a skill which can be learned.

Love,
W.
