Echinacea is an old Native American remedy. Just make a tea of the dried leaves. Adding lemon and honey makes it pleasant to drink . It works by shifting your immune system into high gear so your body can take care of the problem. It is best if used at the first signs of a cold or allergy and will also help you rid your lungs of mold spores. If used early it will prevent the cold from developing but even if the cold has already taken hold it will reduce the severity and duration.
It is easily grown in any part of the US except Alaska as it is a native plant to North America. There are several good reasons to grow it in your garden. Besides being medicinal. Bees like it and it is beautiful. Also known as purple globe flower it is a showy perennial that will come back every year as soon as the soil warms. Naturally the fresher the better but dried leaves will keep for years if put into a sealed container. If cpmpletely dry it is not necessary to refrigerate it but don't expose it to sunlight.
