Anyone research the Dorje Shugden controversy in Tibetan Buddhism?

Please share your findings. I've been all over the board with this issue. After having seen an oracle medium become Dorje Shugden on youtube and offer advise to a Rinpoche and a large gathering of Tibetans, I was electrified, it moved me more than I can express. Beauty and compassion beyond words.
Then I learn anyone who practices this protector practice or prays to Dorje Shugden is literally banned and persecuted by the rest of the Tibetan community by an incredibly strange decree and ban from the Dalai Lama even though his two main teachers loved and prayed to this protector Dorje Shugden. It has split the Tibetan community.
After much research I'm still figuring it out. Anyone have any insights?

Religious conflicts seem so anti Buddhist.

Buddhist fighters led the uprising to throw the Mongols out of China in 14th century.
Sri Lanka is another dark time for Buddhist against Hindu Tamil.
Also in Japan as Shaunc pointed out, lots of violence perpetrated by Buddhists.

Buddhist are human beings and make big mistakes, I wonder if it's down to their Karma...

The only real difference between a Christian soldier and a Buddhist soldier is that a Christian soldier fights what he believes to be righteous or just wars and a Buddhist soldier just fights in wars.

As an educated westerner you can just ignore the conflicts of foreign cultures that cultivate belief in ghosts and spirits or you explore them from a socio-cultural research perspective.
