Britain's Ancient Capital : Secrets of Orkney

Not to be missed. On BBC2 9pm Jan 2nd. A continuation of Neil Oliver's series on Ancient Britain. This sounds good, an examination of the 5000 year old Neolithic culture and "temples, circles, etc. Neil Oliver and other experts.
Am I a fanatic ? Bet your boots, I am !

Thank you Norseman. I would really like to watch that.
I shall have to find some you tube version as I haven't got a telly! and can't watch catch up on BBC without a licence (so I hear!)
I'll keep putting it into you tube search till it comes up one day!

I like Neil Oliver's programmes too.

It's fascinating isn't it. I've seen a prog with Neil Oliver in Orkney before which sparked my interest. I would love to go and see Skara Brae.
Plus I love Neil Oliver a little bit ☺️☺️

Maeshowe used to be more pyramid shape:
"Archaeologist James Farrer first excavated the cairn in 1861, prior to which the mound had a distinctly different shape than it has today.

As can be seen in the illustration , Maeshowe was once conical, with a deep depression in the top. It had a diameter of around 30m (100 ft) and stood 11m (36 ft) high.

The cairn was taken into state care in 1910, at which time a concrete roof was added to the structure. At the same time, the outer mound was sculpted to give it is present "rounded" dimensions of 7.3m high and a 37m diameter."

Yes that's it . Silbury Hill has been thoroughly reworked along with natural erosion . Probably it was more pyramid shape .

Nabta Playa is a stone circle in Egypt . Greece had the Olympic symbol of 5 rings meaning the independent cities. Could it be that stone circles have that territorial aspect along with pyramids for chiefs / kings of the symbolically circled land ? The sun ( and stars) have links to both . Sunset midsummer at Giza is on the sphinx centred between the 2 pyramids as with Stonehenge circle at both midsummer and midwinter solstice , related to death and afterlife.
