I say there is no such thing as a "dream" and that what people call "dreams" are really experiences in non-physical that you're not consciously aware of.
A Sleep Paralysis episode is when you consciously awaken before the paralysis that keeps us from acting out our dreams wears off. It's technically a malfunction, cause you're not supposed to experience it.
But when you do experience it, your focus of awareness isn't fully in this physical reality yet... it's still partially in the non-physical, which then ends up with you having what I call "focus overlay" experiences. Which are basically, you experiencing some "non-physical" things while in the physical.
It's normal... just stay calm and you'll wake up normally soon enough. If you're direly needing to wake up, just focus entirely upon moving a single finger, you'll come around faster.
HOWEVER... I suggest using the state and think of "floating" or "balloons" and have an OBE/AP. :)
